Alfalfa Leaf Spot: Cut Now, Wait or Investigate?

Quick answer: Alfalfa leaf spot can cost you leaves before the mower enters the field. Check the standing crop, not just the windrow. If a leaf disease is confirmed and the stand is ready, timely harvest can retain leaves that would otherwise drop. But a stressed stand, an uncertain diagnosis or a pesticide harvest restriction can change that decision. A rescue spray cannot put lost leaves back.

This guide is for hay producers finding dark spots, yellow lower leaves or unusual leaf drop in standing alfalfa. The useful question is not simply which disease name fits a photograph. It is what you should investigate before choosing to harvest, wait or consider a labeled treatment.

First establish where the leaves are being lost

Look at plants that have not been cut. Compare an affected patch with a better-looking part of the same field, including the lower canopy. Leaves that are already spotted, yellowing and falling while the plant is standing point to a different problem from green leaves that become brittle during curing.

More than one problem can be present. Diseased leaves can also shatter during harvest, and insects can occur in a field with leaf disease. Do not turn this table into a rule that one observation excludes everything else.

What alfalfa leaf spot can look like

Common leaf spot is a specific fungal disease caused by Pseudopeziza medicaginis. It is not a catch-all name for every mark on an alfalfa leaf. The Crop Protection Network's common leaf spot reference describes small brown-to-black lesions that rarely merge, followed by yellowing and leaf drop. Symptoms usually begin on lower leaves and progress upward.

Purdue Extension's illustrated foliar-disease guide gives a useful scale: developed common leaf spot lesions may be approximately 1–3 millimeters across. A small raised fungal structure may be visible within a lesion on the upper leaf surface. That is a clue for a diagnostician, not a reason to identify every small dark spot as common leaf spot.

Other diseases can produce a different pattern. Purdue describes Stemphylium lesions as light brown and oval with darker borders, sometimes with a yellow halo or concentric rings. Leptosphaerulina, often shortened to Lepto, may start as pepper-like spots or develop pale-centered, dark-bordered eyespots. Downy mildew may show yellowed tissue and pale growth on the underside of leaves. Follow the linked photographs rather than relying on a color description alone.

Weather supplies context, not a diagnosis. Several foliar diseases benefit from moist conditions. For common leaf spot, the Crop Protection Network describes survival in old leaf debris, spread to new leaves, and renewed disease-favorable conditions in cool, moist fall weather. A dry spell may reduce new disease development; it does not repair damaged leaves or guarantee the current crop will retain them.

There is another reason to be cautious with photographs: normal alfalfa variation can resemble disease, including some leaf markings. A pattern that stays unchanged is different evidence from spots that increase or spread. Neither one photograph nor a neighbor's diagnosis identifies the cause in your field.

A field record to send with a diagnosis request

Before the crop is cut, make a short record your local Extension adviser or plant diagnostic laboratory can use. Ask the laboratory how it wants samples collected, packaged and shipped; a bag of dried leaves or an image of an entire field may not answer its questions.

Cut now, wait or investigate?

For a harvest-ready stand with confirmed foliar disease, retaining attached leaves is the immediate objective. Purdue recommends avoiding a delayed harvest when leaf spots are causing losses: removing diseased material and opening the canopy can also interrupt disease-favorable conditions. The Crop Protection Network similarly advises harvesting common-leaf-spot-infected alfalfa before leaf drop.

That does not translate into a universal instruction to cut every yellow field immediately. Use this decision sequence:

  1. Confirm the problem well enough to act. If the cause is uncertain, insects are suspected, or whole plants are declining, obtain the appropriate diagnosis rather than selecting a spray from a symptom name.

  3. Check existing pesticide restrictions. A previous application may impose a preharvest interval or other restriction. Disease pressure does not cancel the current product label.
  4. Compare the remaining leaf-retention opportunity with the actual harvest window. Availability of mowing, drying or conservation capacity matters. Do not preserve a calendar date at the expense of watching recoverable leaves fall away.

The stress exception is real. In a Nebraska Extension discussion following a severe 2007 spring freeze, specialists warned that early harvest of already weakened plants could worsen the injury. That historical case illustrates why crop condition can override a simple cut-early rule. Its suggested recovery period and old pesticide discussion are not a current, universal prescription.

What a fungicide can and cannot accomplish

A fungicide cannot reattach fallen leaves or turn dead tissue back into productive leaf area. The Crop Protection Network notes that foliar products labeled for common leaf spot need preventive timing, before symptoms occur. By the time a crop is shedding leaves close to harvest, the question may be how to protect the next crop rather than how to rescue all the current damage.

Do not confuse a fungal disease with an insect problem. An insecticide is not a treatment for common leaf spot. Conversely, a disease diagnosis does not prove that a separate insect infestation is absent. Each needs its own identification and management decision.

Iowa State University Extension's July 2024 review summarizes 14 site-years and 179 fungicide-treatment-by-harvest comparisons. Its practical message is conditional: variety susceptibility, weather, cutting number, application timing, hay value and the complete application cost affect the return. First cutting tended to respond most in that research; later-cutting results do not justify assuming every application will pay.

Any treatment decision must use the currently registered crop and disease uses, application instructions, harvest interval and other restrictions for the specific product in your location. This article does not recommend a product, rate, tank mix or universal spray date.

A break-even check, not a spray recommendation

For a simple yield-only screen, divide the complete treatment cost per acre by the value of an additional marketable ton. Illustration only: a hypothetical $25 per acre application and $200 per US short ton of additional hay require 0.125 ton, or 250 pounds, per acre just to cover that expense, before any extra harvest or selling costs. These are invented inputs, not current prices or a predicted treatment response.

If the expected benefit is a paid quality premium instead, calculate that on the hay actually sold into that market. Do not count the same retained leaves once as extra yield and again as an identical quality benefit. A positive-looking budget also cannot override unsuitable timing, an uncertain diagnosis or a label restriction.

Protect the next cutting and the harvested hay

Keep the field record and inspect regrowth rather than assuming that one harvest ended the problem. Repeated disease may warrant a discussion about variety susceptibility, stand health, soil nutrient status and a locally appropriate prevention plan. Avoid assuming that a root-disease resistance rating on a seed tag describes resistance to every leaf disease.

Once forage is cut, the task changes. Limit avoidable handling loss and follow a sound moisture and storage plan for the chosen conservation system. Harvesting promptly does not make damp forage safe to store as dry hay. Likewise, leaf appearance alone does not establish the feeding value or suitability of a finished lot.
