Fall Armyworms in Hay and Pasture: Scout, Treat, and Recover

Quick answer: Fall armyworms can strip a hayfield or pasture almost overnight in mid-to-late summer. Scout at dawn or dusk and along lush, freshly fertilized edges, and treat when you find about 3 larvae per square foot — while they are still small (under about ¾ inch). Once caterpillars are over 1.5 inches they are nearly done feeding and control is poor. If a cutting is ready, harvest immediately; it removes larvae and salvages the tonnage.

In the summer of 2021, fall armyworms staged one of the worst outbreaks in decades — moths rode storm winds far past their usual range and stripped hayfields and lawns from the Deep South up into the Northeast and Midwest. It was not a one-off: heavy pressure returned in the years since, and university entomologists are again flagging fall armyworm as a threat heading into late summer. How to identify fall armyworm

Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is the larva of a night-flying moth. The caterpillar — the insect in the photo above — ranges from green to brown to nearly black with pale stripes down its sides, and it grows to about 1.5 inches. Two marks confirm the ID: a pale, upside-down "Y" on the front of the dark head capsule, and four black dots arranged in a square on the top of the segment near the tail. They feed most in the cool of morning and evening and hide down in the canopy or thatch during midday heat, which is exactly why they seem to appear "out of nowhere."

A stubborn myth is that armyworms only eat grass. They strongly prefer grasses — bermudagrass, bahiagrass, pearl millet, fescue, orchardgrass, and mixed cool-season hay — but under pressure they absolutely move into legumes. Hay growers have watched them strip alfalfa leaves to the stem:

Where and when they show up

Fall armyworms overwinter only in the Deep South (south Texas and Florida). Each summer, successive generations of moths ride weather fronts northward, so infestations march up the map as the season goes on — south Georgia and Alabama in high summer, the Midwest and Northeast by late summer and fall. Because they cannot survive northern winters, a bad year in the North is entirely a migration event: the moths blow in, lay eggs, and the larvae hatch in waves.

Two patterns are worth burning into memory. First, they love lush, well-fertilized, tender growth — the greenest, best-managed fields are the first hit, which feels deeply unfair to the grower who did everything right. How to scout — and why timing is everything

Fall armyworm control is a race against caterpillar size. Small larvae are easy to kill and have not eaten much; large larvae shrug off insecticide and have already done the damage. So scouting early and often through late summer is the whole game.

  • Scout at dawn and dusk. That is when larvae feed on top of the canopy. In the heat of the day you will underestimate the population because they drop down out of sight.
  • Check the edges and the lushest spots first. Infestations often build on field margins and in the greenest, most recently fertilized areas before spreading.
  • Watch for the tells. Birds suddenly working a field, moths flushing ahead of your equipment, and a field edge that looks "browned" or ragged are all early warnings.
  • Use a threshold. Extension guidance for hay and pasture is commonly around 2–3 larvae per square foot (many use 3). Look at a square-foot area in several spots and count.
  • Re-scout in 1–2 weeks. Eggs hatch in flushes, so a clean field can be infested again a week later. One pass is never enough during a migration year.

The size rule is non-negotiable: treat while larvae are under about ¾ inch. Once they pass roughly 1.25–1.5 inches they are close to pupating, control drops off sharply, and you are mostly paying to spray worms that were about to quit eating anyway.

Control options that work

Growers have real options across price points. The cheap pyrethroids are attractive at around a dollar-fifty an acre and work well on small larvae, but they are short-lived and resistance is a growing problem in the Southeast — so they can disappoint against a heavy or mixed-age infestation. The insect growth regulators and diamides cost more but give you residual protection that catches the next hatch.

There is one more control tactic that costs nothing extra: if a cutting is ready or close, harvest it now. Cutting removes the larvae with the forage, exposes survivors to sun and birds, and salvages tonnage you would otherwise lose. After the worms: bringing the field back

If they got ahead of you and stripped a field, the news is better than it looks. On established perennial grass and legume stands, the crown usually survives — regrowth comes from the base once the leaves are gone. Growers who were sure a field was dead routinely watch it green back up.
