Is Moldy Hay Safe to Feed? Cattle, Horses & How to Prevent It

Quick answer: It depends on the animal and the degree of mold. Never feed visibly moldy hay to horses — they're the most sensitive livestock and even light mold can trigger respiratory disease or colic. Cattle tolerate more, because the rumen breaks down some mold toxins, but heavily molded or mycotoxin-laced hay still causes feed refusal, abortion in pregnant cows, and illness. Every hay producer eventually pulls apart a bale and finds it: the gray dust, the musty smell, the white bloom on a flake. The question that follows is always the same — is moldy hay safe to feed? Why hay molds in the first place

Mold is a moisture problem, not a time problem. Fungal spores are always present on cut forage; they bloom into visible mold when a bale is stored above roughly 14–15% moisture. Bale too wet, stack too tight, store on bare ground, or trap a bale under plastic that can't breathe, and mold can appear within a day or two. The classic offender is the bottom layer in the barn:

When I stack hay inside the barn on a dirt floor the bottom layer gets very moldy. I have tried starting out with stacking on wood pallets and placing bales on their sides… but it doesn't seem to matter.

How to tell if hay is moldy

Use three senses before you feed a questionable bale:

  • Smell. Good hay smells sweet and grassy. Musty, sour, or "old-basement" odors mean mold. As one HayTalk member put it plainly, "moldy hay has a distinctive odor."
  • Look. Break the bale open and inspect the interior, not just the wrapper. Watch for gray, white, black, or blue-green patches, matted flakes, and clumps that break apart in a puff of dust.
  • Feel & dust. A cloud of fine spores when you shake a flake is a warning sign even without obvious color.

For bales you can't fully open — wrapped or stacked — a hay probe or moisture tester helps. Harmless surface mold vs. dangerous mold

Not all mold is equal. A little white surface bloom on the cut ends of a wrapped silage bale — where a bit of air sneaked in — is common and usually low-risk. Farmers feeding wrapped bales know the distinction well:

I wouldn't worry about white mold on the ends. I've had that from a poor wrap job… It is the multi-colored rainbow coalition type mold that I would worry about.

That instinct — surface white mold on wrapped bales is minor, but black, blue-green, and multi-colored growth deep in the bale is serious — is broadly sound. But add one caution from the extension side: you cannot confirm mycotoxin safety by color. The molds that make the most dangerous toxins don't always look dramatic. So use the color rule to flag obvious danger, but when moldy hay is going to sensitive animals, verify with a test rather than a glance.

Is moldy hay safe for cattle?

Cattle are the most forgiving class of livestock here, because rumen microbes break down some mold toxins before they reach the animal. Mildly dusty or lightly molded hay is often fed to mature beef cattle with acceptable results — which is why growers routinely route their moldiest bales to the cow herd:

But "more tolerant" is not "immune." According to Mississippi State University Extension, moldy hay and baleage can cause cattle to refuse feed, lose production, and — most seriously — suffer abortions, especially where Aspergillus molds trigger mycotic abortion in pregnant cows. Is moldy hay safe for horses?

For horses, the answer is simple: no. Horses are the most sensitive common livestock to both mold spores and mycotoxins, and Penn State Extension is blunt that visibly moldy hay should never be fed to them. Their respiratory system is the weak point — inhaled spores trigger heaves (equine asthma / recurrent airway obstruction), a chronic, performance-limiting cough that can become permanent. Moldy hay is also linked to colic and digestive upset in horses, and severe mycotoxin exposure can be life-threatening.

Because a horse's gut lacks the large detoxifying rumen a cow has, toxins pass through more directly. Even hay that a cow could handle can sicken a horse. Mycotoxins: the hidden risk

The reason "just look at it" isn't good enough is mycotoxins — toxic compounds produced by molds such as Aspergillus, Fusarium, and Penicillium. They can be present even when mold looks modest, and absent where mold looks alarming. You cannot see, smell, or taste them. Can moldy hay make you sick?

Yes — don't overlook your own lungs. Repeatedly breathing the spore-laden dust from moldy hay can cause Farmer's Lung, a hypersensitivity pneumonitis that starts with flu-like symptoms and shortness of breath and, with chronic exposure, can cause permanent lung damage. How to prevent moldy hay

The best moldy-hay strategy is to never make any. Every point here comes back to one idea — put up a dry bale and let it breathe:

  • Bale at the right moisture. As a rule of thumb, small square bales should be below about 18% moisture and large round or big square bales lower still — commonly under roughly 15%, because dense packages trap heat and moisture.   • Cure the crop fully. Give hay the field time it needs, and understand that fresh bales sweat after baling — ventilation during that window matters.
