Seller disclosure: XES manufactures and sells bale net wrap. We are not an OEM, and nobody who wrote this page is an OEM-trained or dealer-certified baler technician. We cannot certify that any roll width fits your machine, and a width figure cannot tell you how net will lie on your bales. This is a verification method, not a size recommendation: it names no product, recommends no roll, and where a required value is unpublished it says unresolved.
Quick answer: there is no safe default net wrap width. Not 51 inches, not any other number. A width figure on a carton is a package dimension, not a fit certificate. What decides which roll you may load is a package of facts about one machine: its exact model and product identification number (PIN) or serial, the manual edition covering that serial, the net or edge hardware and controller physically installed, the material and width that manual lists for that hardware, and the roll's own core, outside diameter, mass, winding and threading path. Read the width off your manual and your roll label, then confirm with your OEM dealer. If any item is missing, fit is unresolved — and unresolved means do not buy on a width match.
"Size" is five different measurements
Almost every bad net wrap sizing answer collapses five separate measurements into one word. Two describe your bales, one your machine, one is printed on a carton, and one can only be measured after a bale leaves the chamber.
One convention first: bale dimensions here are written width × diameter. A "4 × 5" bale is roughly 4 ft along its axis and 5 ft across the round face. That ordering is not universal — many listings write diameter first — so whenever you read a bale size, including on a quote, confirm which number is the axial width.

The rule that follows: neither chamber width nor bale width selects a roll. The roll is selected by what your manual lists for the net hardware installed on your machine, confirmed against the label on the roll you are about to load. Anyone answering "what width do I need?" from bale size alone has skipped every step that matters.
The four width labels you will encounter
Buyers in North America run into four nominal width figures again and again: 48, 51, 64 and 67 inches. Be exact about what that is.
It is a list of labels that exist. It is not a universal market inventory — other widths exist, and availability varies by manufacturer, region and season. It is not a set of universal packages: two rolls sharing a width figure can differ in length, material construction, core, outside diameter and mass. And it is emphatically not a recommendation table. The evidence column cites one official manufacturer document, a legitimate worked example covering all four figures — and nothing in it transfers anywhere else.

Scope boundary for the whole table: every documented instance comes from John Deere Operator's Manual OMFH313140, edition "_19," covering the 469, 469S, 569 and 569S round balers. Those mappings apply to those four models and no others. Do not read a row as advice for another Deere model, another manufacturer, or a similar-size machine — that is the error this page exists to stop.
Note what is missing on purpose: roll lengths. Lengths belong to a material and package, not a width. Putting them in a width table is what produces claims like "48- and 51-inch rolls are 9,840 ft."
One official OEM worked example
Rather than assert what "most balers" take, here is one exact case from official documentation. It covers all four width labels in one published table — and is not a template for other machines. John Deere's Operator's Manual OMFH313140 (edition "_19") covers the 469, 469S, 569 and 569S. Its Select Net Wrap Material page (rev. 2015-09-25) carries a table headed "Approximate Width of Net Wrap Rolls" with two machine columns and three material rows:

Four things on that page matter more than the widths.
- These are named materials, not sizes of one product. "Edge to Edge," "CoverEdge" and "B-Wrap" are John Deere product names, each with its own roll length. CoverEdge™ is a proprietary John Deere product and system — not a synonym for "any 67-inch net."
- Published lengths belong to materials, not widths. The same page lists, for the 469 and 469S: Edge to Edge 4023 m (13,200 ft.), CoverEdge 3688 m (12,100 ft.), lighter-weight CoverEdge 2999 m (9,840 ft.). For the 569 and 569S: Edge to Edge 2956 m (9,700 ft.), CoverEdge 2743 m (9,000 ft.), lighter-weight CoverEdge 2133 m (7,000 ft.). B-Wrap is counted in segments instead — 45 for the 469 family, 35 for the 569. Six lengths across four width labels is proof enough that a width carries no length with it.
- Changing to the narrower material is a documented hardware change. The page states: "If using Edge to Edge net wrap material, it requires spacer plugs in end of roll and adjustments made to the net wrap attachment." The Thread and Route Net Wrap Material page (rev. 2013-02-11) repeats it. On this family, moving between the two listed widths is not a drop-in swap.
- The manual restricts the material, not just the dimension. It states: "Use only John Deere approved net wrap material. Approved material is identified by a green strip near each end of the roll. (See your John Deere dealer.)" A roll matching on width has not thereby been approved.
Edge behaviour here is tied to hardware, not a label. The manual documents a COVER-EDGE™ Surface Wrap Unit (rev. 2015-09-30) as an attachment in its own right. Whether a machine carries that unit, a base net frame, or twine-only hardware is a physical fact you confirm by looking — not by reading a model number.
Wrap count is likewise a controller setting, not a width property. The Set Number of Net Wraps page (rev. 2013-02-11) documents 1.5–10 wraps in 0.1 increments, an initial setting of two, and crop minimums of 2 wraps for hay, 3 for straw, wheat hay and cereal grains, and 4 for corn stalks, sudex, hay grazer and milo stalks — and notes that below rated PTO speed a higher monitor setting is needed. None of it changes with roll width.
What this example leaves unresolved is the roll package: core inside diameter, core length, maximum roll outside diameter, maximum roll mass and numeric feed-roll brake tension are not published in the pages reviewed. They stay unresolved rather than estimated, and are what a dealer or parts book must supply. The John Deere Technical Information Store is the official route to the serial-correct publication. The manual's Foreword (rev. 2012-06-27) also instructs owners to record the product identification numbers, and states the baler should be operated, serviced and repaired only by persons familiar with its particular characteristics and the relevant safety rules.
The full-package compatibility gate
Work down this list for the machine in front of you. Every row must resolve from your own manual, machine or dealer. Any unresolved row makes the whole question unresolved — and unresolved means do not purchase on a width match.

Adjacent models do not transfer. A machine one number up or down in the same family, or the same model in a different build year, can carry different net hardware and a different published width. Never resolve a row from a nearby model's manual, a brand page, a listing or an aggregator — resolve it from documentation for your machine, or record it unresolved.
Decision flow
- Identify the machine. Exact model designation plus PIN or serial, read off the machine.
- Get the document that covers it. The manual edition matched to that serial, from the OEM's publication route or your dealer — not a mirror site.
- Establish the installed hardware. Look at the machine: which net or edge system and controller are fitted. Confirm against the manual's attachment pages.
- Resolve the full package. All eleven gate rows. Anything unresolved stops here — a question for your dealer, not an order.
- Observe under control. Only after the gate closes, run a controlled comparison on your own bales.
The order matters. Every skipped step is replaced by an assumption, and the assumptions are where errors live.
Coverage: define it, then observe it
Two terms get used as if they were roll categories. Both are actually observed outcomes on a finished bale, produced by a machine's net delivery, spreader and edge hardware working with compatible material at correct settings.
- Edge to edge (outcome): net reaches both shoulders with no bare band and does not fold onto the bale end. "Edge to Edge" is also a John Deere material name — outcome and product name differ.
- Over the edge / shoulder fold (outcome): net folds around the shoulder onto the bale end.
Neither outcome is a property a generic width carries, and this page claims no outcome for any width on any machine.
To know what your machine does, measure it. Record the same fields on several finished bales — only bales you would accept and move — on the same crop, at comparable moisture, with the same bale-shape target and manual-specified settings: bale width and diameter by tape (not the chamber's nominal size); any bare shoulder band at both ends; any edge fold at both ends; wrinkles or roping; lateral drift; cut quality and tail length; and a count of failed, short or rewrapped bales.
Measurement uncertainty is the main risk, not a footnote. A round bale is compressible and irregular; tape placement on a soft shoulder changes the reading, and diameter changes as a bale settles. Crop, moisture, windrow size, ground speed and chamber fill move bale shape independently of the net. Repeat each measurement the same way, record your own repeat spread, and treat any difference smaller than that spread as "no difference detected." Results compare only within one controlled comparison — never grass hay this week against cornstalks last month.
This page makes no storage or spoilage claim tied to any width. That would require a trial matched on bale geometry, binding, stacking layout, storage base, climate and duration, and no such trial was identified.
Bales per roll: the corrected arithmetic
The most repeated claim in net wrap sizing is that a narrower roll covers more bales because it "uses less material per bale." That is wrong. Net is pulled off lengthwise, so linear feet per bale is set by bale circumference and wrap count, not sheet width.
Linear net per bale ≈ π × actual bale diameter × actual wrap count
Theoretical bales per roll ≈ roll length ÷ (π × actual bale diameter × actual wrap count)
Use consistent units. Use the diameter measured on a finished bale and the wrap count your controller actually delivers.
The correction: if two rolls carry the same linear length, and your baler applies the same wrap count to the same actual bale diameter, the theoretical count is identical whatever the widths. Width changes area covered per bale, and can change package mass when length and construction are otherwise comparable. It does not change linear feet drawn per bale. No width owns a "more bales per roll" advantage.
When labelled lengths differ — the normal case — use each roll's own labelled length. That is why lengths stay out of the width table above: one Deere family alone spans 13,200, 12,100 and 9,840 ft across two width labels, the other 9,700, 9,000 and 7,000 ft across two more. Length travels with the material and package, not the width figure.
And the formula is not a ceiling. It is a geometry-only estimate, and real consumption moves either way. Longitudinal stretch can mean a shorter unstretched length covers one bale circumference, pushing yield above the estimate; tails, ragged cuts, repeat wrap cycles, material lost to jams and the remnant on the core push it below. Controller calibration and actual bale diameter add more variation.
Treat the formula as a planning check and your observed count of acceptable bales per roll as authoritative. Mark the roll, count the bales you accepted off it, record the total when it runs out, and repeat. No published bales-per-roll figure, and no bonus-footage claim, substitutes for that count.
Delivered cost per acceptable bale
Price per roll hides the answer; price per foot hides it worse. The comparable unit is delivered cost per acceptable bale: what you paid to get the roll into your yard, divided by the bales you kept.

Run a sensitivity check before acting on line 9. Re-run it with acceptable-bale count and delivered cost each moved ten percent either way. If the ranking flips inside those bands you have noise, not a cost answer, and the decision belongs to fit and observed coverage. The worksheet uses your quoted, delivered prices; no supplier's internal cost or margin belongs in it.
What changed in this guide
An earlier version answered this question with market generalizations. All are withdrawn as unsupportable. Nothing is now attached to a width label: no default or "fits most" option; no chamber or bale size; no overhang or coverage figure; no roll length; no bales-per-roll advantage, fixed count or bonus footage; no claim resting on baler age, region or crop.
The brand-and-model width matrix was deleted rather than patched. It contained errors, and no such matrix belongs here unless every row is verified in official OEM documentation for that exact model and serial range.
Safety boundary
Your exact operator manual controls. What follows is a floor, not a procedure. It does not replace the manual written for your model and serial, and is not a substitute for OEM or dealer instruction.
- Machine parked on level ground, tractor brake set, secured against movement.
- PTO disengaged, engine off, key removed, all motion stopped before anything is opened, threaded, cleared or measured.
- Gate locked or positively supported before working inside or around an open gate — hydraulics alone are not support.
- Stored energy — hydraulic, spring, gravity, tension — controlled exactly as your manual specifies, never assumed zero because the engine is off.
- All guards, shields and interlocks in place, undamaged and working.
- Roll handled at its labelled mass using the manual's loading method. Never estimate roll weight from width.
Do not perform a threading, spacer, spreader or tension adjustment from a general description — including this one. Those procedures are machine-specific. Where the Deere example quotes a manual, it quotes that manual's own language: the threading page cautions to avoid injury from entanglement in moving rolls and to disengage the PTO, shut off the tractor engine and disconnect the monitor-controller power plug before servicing; and the Lock the Gate page (rev. 2014-07-01) states that while working inside or around the baler with an open gate, the gate lock lever must be moved to the locked position. Your manual's equivalents take precedence. If the correct edition for your serial is unavailable, guards are missing or damaged, or the wrap system is faulting, stop and involve your dealer.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a safe default net wrap width?
No. No width is a default, and 51 inches is not one despite how often that is repeated. A width figure is a package dimension printed on a carton, not evidence that a roll will load, thread, tension and cut correctly on your machine. The width you may use is the one your manual lists for the net or edge hardware installed on your exact model and serial, confirmed against the roll label and with your OEM dealer. If you cannot resolve that, the answer is unresolved — and unresolved means do not buy on a width match.
Does my bale width or chamber width decide which roll I buy?
No. Bale width is the distance from one flat end of a finished bale to the other; chamber width is the machine's internal width. Both describe geometry, and neither specifies what the net system accepts. The roll is selected from the width and material your manual lists for the hardware installed on your machine, then verified against the physical roll label. There is also no rule that net must be wider than the bale by some margin — that is a shortcut, not a specification.
What is the difference between 48-inch and 51-inch net wrap?
Two nominal package widths, and nothing more general can be said honestly. In one official example — John Deere Operator's Manual OMFH313140 edition "_19" — the 469 and 469S list Edge to Edge net width at 122 cm (48 in.) and CoverEdge and B-Wrap net width at 129 cm (51 in.). Those are different named materials with their own roll lengths, not two sizes of one product, and the manual states that using Edge to Edge requires spacer plugs in the end of the roll and adjustments to the net wrap attachment. That mapping applies to those models only; any other machine must be resolved from its own documentation.
What is the difference between 64-inch and 67-inch net wrap?
Again two nominal package widths with no universal meaning. In the same manual the 569 and 569S list Edge to Edge net width at 163 cm (64 in.) and CoverEdge and B-Wrap net width at 170 cm (67 in.) — named materials with their own published roll lengths, and the same documented spacer-plug and attachment adjustment when moving to Edge to Edge. Neither figure corresponds to a chamber size, neither carries an overhang or coverage figure, and 67 inches is not a generic name for CoverEdge, which is a John Deere proprietary product and system. On any other machine both mean nothing until that machine's manual says otherwise.
What dimensions besides width do I need to check?
Width is one line in a package. You also need the core inside diameter and length your mandrel accepts, the maximum roll outside diameter and mass your cradle and loading method allow, the winding direction and leader so net comes off the correct face, the threading path, and the brake, tension, spreader and stretch settings specified for that material. Alongside those: the exact model and PIN or serial, the manual edition covering that serial, the net or edge system and controller installed, and any spacers, plugs or kits with part numbers. Several are often unpublished, including in the Deere pages reviewed here — when one cannot be resolved, record it unresolved and ask your dealer.
Does a narrower roll give more bales per roll?
Not by being narrower. Net is drawn off lengthwise, so linear feet per bale is approximately pi times the actual bale diameter times the actual wrap count — width does not appear in that expression. With equal linear length, equal wraps and equal actual bale diameter, the theoretical count is identical for any width. When labelled lengths differ, which is usual since length belongs to a material and package rather than a width, use each roll's own labelled length in roll length divided by (pi times actual bale diameter times actual wrap count), in consistent units. Treat that as a geometry-only estimate, not a ceiling: longitudinal stretch can reduce the unstretched length drawn, while tails, ragged cuts, repeat wraps, jams and the core remnant increase it. Your observed count of acceptable bales per roll is authoritative.
