Round Baler Monitor Troubleshooting: Why Bale Command and BaleTrak Quit — and How to Fix Them

Quick answer: Most round baler monitor problems are power and wiring, not a dead monitor. A blank screen or random shutdown usually traces to a blown fuse, corroded or loose connector pins, an unsupported harness with a broken wire, or — surprisingly often — a tractor alternator spiking past 16 volts, which makes the monitor shut itself off. What a round baler monitor actually does

On a modern round baler, the in-cab monitor isn't a luxury — on an auto-wrap machine it's required to make a bale. It drives the bale-shape fill indicators that tell you how to feed the windrow, counts and triggers the net-wrap or twine cycle, sounds the full-bale alarm, and on some balers reads bale moisture. Lose the monitor on an auto-wrap baler and you lose the ability to wrap. As one tech explains when sorting out whether a used baler even needs one:

"Open the right side door. If you see a belt you do not need a monitor since you have an auto wrap tying system. The auto wrap balers came with a full bale alarm only... If you do not see a belt then you will need a monitor to bale."

"My monitor is dead": no power and random shutdowns

A blank screen, or a monitor that blinks off when you hit a bump, sends most people straight to suspecting the monitor. It almost never is. Work the power path first.

Start at the fuse and the connector pins. The single most repeated piece of advice from the techs is to clean and reseat the connections — power pins at the monitor, the cab connector, and the plug going back to the baler:

"Have you checked the pins at the monitor connector? Both power and the connection going to the baler? Also the pins at the tractor cab connector to the baler? May be loose or some corrosion there. Also for some strange reason my problem sometimes go away when I unplug and replug the connections with nothing changed!"

Support the harness so it can't break a wire. The baler-to-tractor harness takes a beating, and a wire that's cracked inside the insulation will cut power intermittently — exactly the kind of fault that shows up only over bumps. Two fixes from the same discussion: tie the harness up so its weight isn't hanging on the connector, and know where the wire usually breaks.

"You should support the harness connected to the monitor. The baler harness i tie strap to the hyd hoses so there is no weight pulling down on the connector... If there is a break in the wire it will probably be close to the pto hanger where the harness goes through the loop. 4 series balers had more issues with this."

Then check the thing almost nobody suspects: high voltage. These monitors will shut themselves off to protect their electronics if system voltage climbs too high — and a failing tractor alternator that spikes over 16 volts is a classic, hard-to-find cause. It looks like a baler problem because the spikes coincide with throttling up or rough ground:

"Have you checked voltage when the monitor goes out. At 16v the system will shut down... it is like a phone call I recently received about a monitor shutting down when they start feeding hay into the baler. The customer thought the problem was caused by the action of the baler, where instead when he started feeding hay into the baler he was throttling up causing the voltage to increase past 16v."

That diagnosis solved the case in that very thread — and a separate one. In the first, the owner found "The alternator was acting up and randomly spiking to 16.5V. It just coincided with jerks and bumps" (E220). In a John Deere BaleTrak thread, after chasing low-voltage shutdowns and net-wrap faults, the owner reported: "found alternator voltage was occasionally high. Switched tractors, worked good" (RockyHill, thread 103017). If your monitor blinks out, put a voltmeter on the system before you condemn anything.

"It runs but won't wrap (or tie)"

A baler that powers up but won't complete a wrap or tie cycle is a different hunt. The fault is usually in the settings, a sensor, a relay, or the actuator — and the most common one is embarrassingly simple.

Check the wrap-count setting first. If a custom wrap or tie pattern is set to zero, the baler will sit there and never trigger — and it looks exactly like a broken auto function. One grower hand-tied more than 300 bales before finding it:

Know what still works manually — it narrows the fault fast. If you can wrap or tie with the manual switch but not on auto, the relays and actuator are probably fine and you're looking at a setting, a sensor, or a control wire. The tech's logic, plus the bale-size minimums that quietly disable auto:

"More than likely you have a broken wire. If you are trying to bale small bales the auto will not work. I think the min is 45 for twine and 48 for net... Another common problem is relays. Since you can operate manually the relays should be ok. The switch under the panel sends power directly to the relays. The extend/retract buttons send the request to the controller on the baler and then the controller sends power to the relays."

On John Deere, test the net-wrap actuator current (Channel 18). BaleTrak has a built-in service routine that reads the actuator motor's current draw and tells you whether you're chasing a wiring, voltage, or mechanical-binding problem. The procedure straight from the service manual:

"With monitor-controller in NET mode, press and hold COUNTER key while turning monitor-controller ON... until 'CH 018' appears... Display should show a current flow reading between '1' and '8' while actuator motor is operating during mid stroke. Below normal readings indicate low tractor voltage, or poor or corroded harness connections. Above normal readings indicate binding linkage or partially shorted motor windings."

Erratic bale size or a reading that won't change

A bale-shape display that jumps around, or a bale-size readout frozen on one number, usually comes back to the same two culprits as the power faults: the potentiometer/sensor that feeds bale size, and the connector pins that carry its signal. Buying a used baler with a missing or stolen monitor isn't a dead end — within a brand's family, the monitors interchange more than you'd think. On New Holland, the same Bale Command Plus monitor runs across the 4-, 8-, and BR-series balers; they just wear different housings:
