The New Holland BR740 is a 4-foot fixed-chamber round baler, part of NH's BR-series produced through the 2000s before being replaced by the Roll-Belt platform. It's still a common sight on smaller hay operations and has one of the largest installed bases of any 4-foot NH baler.

Why 48″ is the right size for the BR740
The BR740 is one of the New Holland models where chamber size depends on which kit you have installed. Out of the box, the BR740 runs 48-inch (123 cm) net wrap. With NH's optional Duckbill Baffle Kit installed, the chamber inlet is modified to also accept 51-inch (130 cm) wrap. Confirm with your dealer or check your build specs before ordering 51-inch — running 51 without the kit will jam.
Net wrap width is determined by the chamber width of the baler, not the bale diameter. A br-series 4-ft baler like the New Holland BR740 has a chamber that accepts 48″ wrap. Going narrower will leave bare patches at the bale edges (water ingress, hay loss); going wider than the chamber's tolerance jams the wrap roller or causes wrinkling.
Important: the New Holland BR740 requires the OEM Duckbill Baffle Kit to run the wider size (51″). Without the kit installed, stick with 48″. Confirm your build spec with your dealer before ordering.
How many wraps per bale on a New Holland BR740?
XES guidance based on crop and storage:
- Silage (high moisture, short-term): 2–2.5 wraps
- Hay (dry, standard outdoor storage): 2.5–3 wraps
- Straw (low cohesion): 3–4 wraps
- Outdoor storage past 12 months or harsh UV/freeze-thaw: add 1 extra wrap

Frequently asked questions
What size net wrap does a New Holland BR740 use?
A BR740 uses 48-inch (123 cm) net wrap natively. With NH's Duckbill Baffle Kit installed, it also accepts 51-inch (130 cm). XES SKU E48X9840G ($239.99) is the standard fit.
What is the Duckbill Baffle Kit?
The Duckbill Baffle Kit is a New Holland-supplied accessory that modifies the BR740's chamber inlet so it can accept 51-inch wrap instead of the native 48-inch. Confirm with your NH dealer whether your specific BR740 has the kit installed before ordering 51-inch.
Will XES net wrap fit the BR740A and the original BR740?
Yes. The BR740 and BR740A use the same chamber geometry. SKU E48X9840G fits both.
What about the older NH 648 — same wrap?
Yes. The 648, 658, and the BR740-series all share the 48-inch 4-foot chamber. Same SKU.
How many bales per roll on a BR740?
At a typical 3 wraps per bale on a 5-ft-diameter bale, 9,840 ft of XES net wrap covers about 200–210 bales per roll — roughly 157 at a tighter 4 wraps.
