Every June the same question turns up on the farm forums: a neighbour wants his bales wrapped, the wrapper is sitting in the yard, and nobody knows what the job is actually worth. Unlike dry-hay baling — where you can look up a published average for your state in about thirty seconds — custom bale wrapping rates are close to invisible in the official data.
That is not an accident. We went through the current published custom-rate surveys for several major hay states, and most of them simply do not carry a line for wrapping bales in plastic. This guide pulls together what the surveys do publish, what working operators told each other they were charging between 2015 and 2024, and — more useful than either — how to build a defensible rate from your own film cost and throughput instead of copying somebody three states away.
Quick answer: Custom bale wrapping is usually quoted per bale, and the number depends almost entirely on who supplies the plastic. Where the operator brings the film, producers reported paying roughly $8–$14 a bale across 2023–2024 for round baleage. Where the customer supplies the film and the operator brings only the machine, the rate drops to around $2.50–$4 a bale. Film alone typically runs $3–$5.50 a bale. The one extension survey that publishes a wrapping-only line — Maryland and Delaware, 2025 — puts it at $13.00 average (median $12, range $10–$18, 61 operators). Always state layers, film thickness, loading, end caps, travel and minimum bale count in the quote.

Why there is almost no published benchmark for bale wrapping
State extension services run custom-rate surveys every year or two, and they are the normal starting point for pricing farm work. For plastic bale wrapping, they mostly come up empty.
The 2026 Nebraska Agricultural Custom Rates Report from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Center for Agricultural Profitability publishes a rate for baling large round bales with net wrap — an average of $17.88 per bale (most common $20, range $12–25, from 26 reports) — but carries no line at all for wrapping bales in plastic film.
Kansas Custom Rates 2026, published by K-State's AgManager.info, is the same story in more detail. It breaks round baling down by bale weight — $16.06 per bale for large rounds under 1,500 lb with net (range $12–20, 51 reports) and $18.96 per bale for those over 1,500 lb with net (range $14–25, 54 reports, up $1.20 from 2024) — and reports an entire haying operation at $27.15 per large round bale. Plastic wrapping does not appear.
One survey does publish a clean wrapping-only rate. Custom Work Charges in Maryland and Delaware (FS-683, University of Maryland Extension, updated 2025) surveyed 61 custom operators and farmers in autumn 2024 and lists "Round Bale Wrapping (Rate/Bale)" on its own line, separate from baling:

Ohio's factsheet takes the other common approach, bundling wrapping into the baling line. The Ohio Farm Custom Rates 2024 factsheet from Ohio State University Extension lists three round-bale services side by side, which makes it useful for a different reason — you can subtract one from another:

Figures as published by Ohio State University Extension for 2024. Two cautions before you lean on that $20.38. First, it is baling plus wrapping, not wrapping on its own. Second, it rests on four responses, against 38 for the baling-only line — a sample that thin tells you the shape of the market, not a precise price. Ohio issues updated editions, so check the current factsheet before quoting from it.
Used carefully, though, it is informative in a way the headline number is not. Subtract the same survey's baling-only average from the baled-and-wrapped average and you get an implied wrapping-and-plastic component of about $8.29 a bale.
Now put the three published sources next to each other. Ohio's implied wrapping component is about $8.29 with film included; Maryland and Delaware's surveyed wrapping line is $13.00 average with a $10–$18 range; and Kansas and Nebraska decline to publish a figure at all. That is a benchmark spanning roughly $8 to $18 a bale — which is almost exactly the range working operators quote each other, and far too wide to price a job from. The rest of this guide is about narrowing it with your own numbers.
Before you price a job, check whether your own state extension service publishes anything — several run a custom-rate survey every year or two, and a local figure beats a borrowed one. Just read the response count next to any rate you rely on.
What operators actually charged, 2015–2024
Because the surveys are so thin, the real price discovery happens between operators on the farm forums. The table below collects rates that named producers posted publicly, with the year each was stated. These are individual quotes from specific operations, not survey averages — treat them as a sense of the range and its direction, not as current market prices.

Two patterns come straight off that table. The first is that the rate roughly doubled between 2015 and 2024, and operators were explicit about why. A south-eastern Nebraska producer traced his own increase directly to the plastic:
"Too cheap. When rolls were $75 a roll I charged 10 a bale inline with 8 wraps. Now im at 13 a bale with the increase in plastic cost."

The second is that who supplies the film explains most of the spread. The $2.50 machine-only rental and the $13 all-in rate are not really disagreeing with each other; they are quoting different jobs. A north-western Pennsylvania producer who does both spelled it out:
"I use an inline wrapper. Sunfilm costs $80/roll. Wrapper uses two rolls at a time. I get 50-55 bales( 56” wet ) per two rolls. I figure $2.9-3.2 per bale for sunfilm. I rent wrappers from two different neighbors. Both are at $2.50/bale. I supply sunfilm."

Add his two components — about $3 of film plus $2.50 of machine — and you land near $5.50 a bale for a job he runs himself. The gap between that and a $10–$13 full-service rate is the operator's labour, travel, loading, machine ownership and margin. That is the whole pricing question in one line.
The six things that move the number
Most disputes over a wrapping bill are not about the headline rate. They are about what somebody assumed was included. Settle all six of these in the quote:
- Who supplies the film. The single biggest variable. Expect a swing of roughly $3–$5.50 a bale.
- Layers and film thickness. Six layers of 1 mil and ten layers of 1 mil are materially different jobs. Quote the layer count and the mil.
- Who loads the wrapper. Feeding an inline wrapper is a second person and usually a second machine. One Missouri operator charged an extra $1 a bale to load using the customer's tractor.
- End caps. Charged separately almost everywhere — $5 each in one 2021 quote, $10 each in a 2024 one.
- Travel. Commonly $2 a mile one way, or folded into a minimum.
- Minimum bale count. Operators quoted 40- and 50-bale minimums. Below that the setup time eats the job.
Whether the bales are lined up and ready matters as much as any of these. A north-east Missouri operator who has wrapped for 25 years advises having 80% or more of the bales hauled in before you start, and lining them up in a herringbone pattern rather than parallel to the wrapping row — on a well-organised site he reckoned on 80–100 bales an hour.
If the bales are not ready, say so in the quote and price the waiting.
Film cost per bale: the figure everything else sits on
You cannot price the job until you know your film cost per bale, and that number moves with the roll you buy. Rolls are sold by width, thickness and length, and thickness trades directly against length. One Michigan producer gave the rule of thumb for 30" film:
"1 mil x 30" is usually ~5,000' · 1.2 mil x 30" is usually ~4,100' · 1.5 mil x 30" is usually ~3,250'"

That is why comparing rolls on sticker price alone misleads. A 1.5 mil roll holds roughly two-thirds the film length of a 1 mil roll of the same width, so a like-for-like comparison has to be run per foot, or better, per bale at your layer count.
Reported film costs cluster tightly once you do that. A north-east Missouri producer put his own 2024 film cost at "a little over $3 a bale" on 52–55" bales; the north-western Pennsylvania operator above calculated $2.90–$3.20; and a 2024 customer quote split an $11 rate into $5.50 of film and $5.50 of wrapping. Call it $3–$5.50 a bale depending on bale size, layer count and what you paid for the roll.
Film prices themselves have been volatile. In 2021 one dealer reported Sunfilm at $115 a roll for 30"×5,000' against a generic at $98, both up sharply from about $75 the previous year; by late 2024 a north-western Pennsylvania producer was buying Sunfilm at $80 a roll. Book early where you can — the same 2021 discussion noted Gold Max booked in December at $79. Build your rate from the bottom up
Copying a neighbour's number is how operators end up working for nothing. Build the rate instead. This worksheet uses illustrative figures chosen to show the method — substitute your own.

Two lines deserve a second look. Bales per hour is where new operators are most optimistic. One producer's first season with a new wrapper is instructive — 27 bales took four hours on day one, and 23 bales took one hour the next day. Quote your first jobs off day-one numbers, not day-two numbers.
And margin is not optional. As one southern Iowa producer put it bluntly when a wrapping rate looked thin: is it worth killing half a day for a few hundred dollars using your own equipment and your own plastic? If the answer is no, the rate is too low.
How many layers you quote changes your price
Layer count is a genuine disagreement among experienced operators, and it has a direct price consequence: each extra pair of layers adds film cost and wrapping time. The two camps are easy to summarise.
The higher-layer camp treats film as cheap insurance. A western New York producer:

The other camp argues thickness beats layer count. A north-east Missouri operator with 25 years of wrapping behind him:
"Originally, for simplicity, I said ‘6 layers’ of Sunfilm. What I actually prefer is 4 layers of Sunfilm Gold Max (1.5 mil film). Protects better from sharp stems poking through than any 1 mil plastic. Wrapping for 25 years; never a problem that I know of."

A Kentucky operator running only 1 mil film in his area splits the difference by crop condition, using a minimum of seven wraps on dry hay and nine to ten on silage. That is a sensible commercial position: tie the layer count to moisture and intended storage life, then price each specification separately.

Renting the wrapper out instead of running it
Renting the machine and staying home looks attractive: the north-western Pennsylvania figures above show neighbours renting wrappers at $2.50 a bale with no labour attached. Operators who do it warn that the economics are better than the experience.

A middle path that several operators prefer is to send the machine and the operator, priced as one service. A Kentucky producer doing a couple of thousand bales a year does exactly that and does not rent the machine out at all. Agree these terms before the first bale
- Rate and what it includes — per bale, with film supply stated explicitly.
- Specification — layer count and film thickness, in writing.
- Bale size — diameter and width; a 4×4 and a 5×6 are not the same job.
- Who loads — and whose tractor and operator.
- End caps — whether wanted, and price each.
- Travel and minimum — mileage basis and minimum bale count.
- Site readiness — how many bales must be hauled in before you arrive.
- Payment — timing, and whether part-payment in bales is acceptable.
That last point is more common than you would think. One Wisconsin producer bought an inline wrapper intending to part-fund it with custom work, offering customers the choice of paying cash or a percentage of the bales — which meant he first had to establish what a wrapped bale was worth. Why do published custom rate surveys not list bale wrapping?
Most do not receive enough responses to report it separately. The 2026 Nebraska and Kansas surveys publish round-baling rates with net wrap but no plastic wrapping line at all, and Ohio's 2024 baled-and-wrapped figure rests on just four responses against 38 for baling alone. Maryland and Delaware's 2025 survey is a useful exception.
How many bales an hour can you wrap?
An experienced operator with bales already hauled in and lined up reported 80–100 bales an hour on an inline wrapper. Expect far less while learning: one producer's first outing took four hours for 27 bales, then one hour for 23 bales the following day.
The bottom line
There is no reliable published market rate for custom bale wrapping, and waiting for one is not a plan. What the surveys do tell you is a wide bracket: baling a round bale with net wrap runs roughly $16–$19 in the central plains, Ohio's 2024 figures imply about $8 a bale for the wrapping and film on top of baling, and Maryland and Delaware's 2025 survey puts wrapping at $13 average with a $10–$18 spread. Working operators quote inside that same band, which is reassuring and not remotely precise enough to price a job from.
Use those as a sanity check, not as your price. Work out your own film cost per bale, be honest about how many bales an hour you will really wrap, add loading, travel and machine ownership, then put a margin on it. Write the specification down — layers, mil, bale size, who loads, end caps, minimum — and most of the arguments disappear before they start.
