Lodged Hay: How to Cut, Dry and Bale a Flattened Crop

You walk out the morning after a thunderstorm and the field you were going to cut tomorrow is flat. Not leaning — flat, laid over in swirls, with the heads pointing whichever way the last gust went. A lodged crop is one of the few hay problems that gets worse the longer you look at it: the bottom leaves start yellowing from lack of light within days, the crop traps moisture at ground level, and mold and rot move in underneath.

Lodged hay is also one of the few jobs where technique matters far more than horsepower. The direction you drive, the tilt of the cutterbar, and how patient you are with ground speed will make a bigger difference than which brand of mower-conditioner is on the drawbar. This guide covers how to get a flattened crop off the field with the least loss — and what to do about the wet slugs it leaves behind in the windrow.

Quick answer: Mow into the lodging — drive against the direction the crop is lying so the cutterbar meets the heads first. Tilt the cutterbar forward to reach under the mat, drop your ground speed a gear or two while keeping full PTO speed, and run sharp knives. Expect to give up your usual stubble height: getting the crop off cleanly beats protecting the stand on that one cutting. Then plan for uneven drying — lodged crops produce sopping-wet, rope-like slugs in an otherwise dry windrow, and those slugs are what heat a bale later.


Why hay lodges — and what you can actually change

Lodging is usually blamed on the storm, but the storm is only the trigger. Whether a crop goes down when the wind hits depends on how strong the stems were to begin with, and several of those factors are within your control.

Nitrogen timing on grass stands

Heavy early nitrogen on a grass hay field produces tall, lush, top-heavy growth with stems that can't carry it. One member described watching a neighbour's fields go flat two springs running because the co-op fertilized first thing in the spring, and switched his own program to apply right after first cutting instead. Another grower was refreshingly honest about his own field: he had dumped a lot of fertilizer on it, the grass got tall, and once it was wet it simply got too heavy to stand.

If a particular field lodges every year, look at your fertility program and the timing of it before you look at anything else.

Potassium and stem strength

Potash gets discussed mostly for yield and stand persistence, but it also builds cell wall structure — and weak cell walls mean weak stems. One member traced a chronically lodging alfalfa field to low potash despite farming soils that supply potash naturally, corrected it with a liquid application, and reported the field stood up that season with noticeably less disease pressure as well. A soil test is cheap insurance on a field that keeps going down.

Modern alfalfa varieties are bred for tonnage, not standing

This complaint comes up constantly and it has real substance behind it. A lot of contemporary alfalfa genetics were selected for high-tonnage, frequently-cut dairy silage systems rather than for standing power in a dry-hay operation. As one grower put it:

"I agree the plant breeders have been breeding for dairy hay cut every 28 days. The alfalfa now days has finer stems then yrs ago and probably tests higher also. I have less standibility issues since I've planted more grass in the mix."

Two practical responses come out of that thread: look for varieties marketed on standability rather than pure tonnage, and consider adding grass to the mix. A grass component physically holds an alfalfa stand up, and it's the fix growers report most consistently.

Cutting too late

The longer a crop stands past its window, the taller and heavier it gets and the more likely a storm puts it down. If a field routinely lodges pre-bud, before you'd normally cut it, that's a signal to cut earlier rather than to keep waiting for bloom. Mow into the lodging — this matters more than your machine

If you take one thing from this article, take this. A disc mower does not lift a crop; it cuts what it can get underneath. When the crop is lying down, the only way the knives reach stem bases is if you approach from the direction that lets the heads feed in first.

"To mow clean a disc machine needs to get under the crop. A disc machine, in my opinion, will not lift a crop. The direction the crop is laying makes a big difference on how clean the cut will be. Mow into the heads of a crop and you will mow cleanly, but at a higher HP requirement. Mow any other direction and the cut will not be impressive."

Drive with the lodging and the machine rides up over the mat and leaves a shaggy, half-cut stubble with a lot of crop still attached to the ground. One grower described exactly that on a sickle machine — clean going into the lay, riding over it and leaving a shaggy stubble going the other way.

The practical consequence is that you may have to mow the whole field in one direction, deadheading back on every pass. It is slower and it burns more fuel, but on a badly lodged crop it is the difference between getting most of the hay and getting half of it. Growers who deal with severe lodging regularly accept this as normal.

When the crop is down in several directions — blown one way, partly recovered, then blown another — pick the predominant lay and accept that some areas will cut poorly. Whorled and swirled lodging is the hardest case there is.


Machine setup for a down crop

Tilt the cutterbar forward

This is the primary adjustment on a disc mower-conditioner and it's the opposite of what you do the rest of the season. Tilting the discs forward drops the leading edge and lets the knives reach in under the mat. Growers who normally run flat or tilted back for tall stubble reverse it specifically for lodged crops:

"Run mine tilted back all the way unless have a seriously lodged crop, if I'm getting 90% of it in a lodged crop I don't tilt it forward anymore."

That 90% figure is a good benchmark. Tilt forward until you're getting most of the crop, then stop — every extra degree of tilt is more soil contact, more ash in the bale, and more risk to knives and guards.

Accept a lower stubble, on purpose, for this one cutting

Everything in our hay cutting height guide says protect the stand with 4" of stubble on grass. A badly lodged crop is the standing exception. If you can't get under the mat you don't harvest it at all, and leaving a thick layer of rotting flat crop on the field smothers the regrowth anyway. Take the crop, then go back to your normal height next cutting.

One grower with a compromise worth stealing: mow around 3" and take the hay off, let the field dry a couple of days, then run a rotary cutter with suction blades as low as possible over the remaining lodged material at a slow speed. You get the harvestable crop and clean the field for regrowth in two passes.

Slow down, but keep the PTO up

Lodged crops need more power per acre and more time per foot. Drop a gear or two on the tractor while keeping full rated PTO speed so disc tip speed stays high — knife speed is what gives you a clean cut in a tangled mat. One member described getting badly lodged, wet, rank timothy that had been blown in three directions by tilting the head fully down and going a gear slower, adding that it took time and patience but it all came up.

Sharp knives and good guards

Dull knives get away with a lot in a standing crop because the stem is held upright and shears against itself. In a lodged crop nothing holds the stem, so the blade has to cut cleanly on contact or it just pushes the material down. Change knives more often than you think you need to. On sickle machines, good sections and guards make a large difference. Higher-angle blades — 14 degrees rather than the more common 7 — are also designed to lift material better as they cut.

Crop lifters

Lifters are the purpose-built answer and they are common enough on first cutting in lodging-prone regions to be routine. One grower noted that first cutting almost always gets the crop lifters installed, and that the year he didn't need them was the exception worth remarking on. If you're fighting lodging every year, price a set.

Narrow your effective cutting width

This is a clever trick that doesn't get mentioned much. Running roughly a foot less than your machine's full width keeps the tractor-side shoe running in clean, already-cut stubble rather than climbing over the edge of the standing mat. You lose a little productivity per pass and gain a much more consistent cut.


Disc or sickle in a lodged crop?

Here the experienced growers genuinely disagree, and it's worth understanding both positions rather than picking one.

The case for a sickle haybine: it has a reel. A reel physically pulls the crop back into the cutterbar, which is exactly what a lodged crop needs and exactly what a disc machine can't do. One grower whose hay lodged most years reported the reel did a good job of lifting it as it cut. Another said the old haybines with a reel picked it up better than discbines.

The case against: the same reel and rollers can grab a lodged crop before the cutterbar gets to it and pull plants out by the roots — and root balls plus mud in the rolls is a genuine mess. A sickle bar also struggles badly in wet, heavy material and plugs.

The case for a disc mower-conditioner: it is far more tolerant of heavy, wet, tangled material and won't plug the way a sickle will. What it won't do is lift, which is why direction and tilt carry the load.

The honest summary came from a member in that discussion: machinery won't solve your problem. No cutterbar is designed for flat, wet grass. Technique and patience close most of the gap, and buying a different mower to fix lodging is usually a disappointment. Lodged alfalfa: cut it short or leave the stems?

This is the recurring question on lodged first-cutting alfalfa, and the reasoning on both sides is sound. Leaving stems gives you air under the windrow for drying and keeps ash down. Cutting short gets you the crop and, more importantly, sets up the next cutting.

The forum consensus leans clearly toward cutting it short when it's lodged:

"I have tried it both ways and I think you will be happier with cutting it short this time.....next cutting will be much nicer if you do. First cutting is the least desirable anyway because of the larger stems."

A second member agreed and added the mechanism: it dries better cut short, and if you leave the stems your next cutting tends to come in stemmy. Since alfalfa stores its reserves below ground in the crown and taproot, a short cut costs the stand very little — which is precisely why the lodged-alfalfa answer differs from the lodged-grass answer.

On grass, you have less room. Take what you can get under, but recognize that repeated scalping of an orchardgrass or timothy stand is how you end up reseeding.


The real problem comes after mowing: rope slugs and uneven drying

Cutting a lodged crop is the visible challenge. Drying it is the one that costs money, and it's badly under-discussed.

When a soaking-wet lodged crop goes through the conditioner, the material doesn't lay out flat. It twists into dense, rope-like bundles that shed water on the outside and stay sopping wet on the inside. Days later the rest of the windrow is fit to bale and those slugs are still green. One member's description is the best we've seen of the phenomenon:

"They are actually less of a clump and more like handfuls of hay roped together… they'll be about a inch and a half in diameter and literally sopping wet yet while the rest of the hay will be getting close to ready for baling."

He found the problem only appeared on down hay mowed while soaking wet — the same crop mowed after it had dried on the ground behaved normally. That leads to the single most effective drying tactic available:

If you can wait, let a lodged crop dry standing before you mow it. Several growers independently concluded the same thing: wait until most of the leaves are dry before mowing. It costs you a day, and it saves you a doubled tedding pass and a windrow full of wet cores.

How to break up the slugs you do get

Once they exist, the fix is a tedder and patience. Going faster does not help — the tines grab a rope and fling it through intact. The technique that works is the opposite:

"I slow down to a creep and let the tedder just pick it apart and blow it out slowly. Sometimes I will spin around and go over a clump a second or third time… slowing down to go faster works better. Let the tedder do the work."

Baling a crop that came off lodged ground

This is where a lodged crop turns into a storage problem, and it's the part we care most about as a net-wrap manufacturer, because it is a common source of bales that heat, mold or spoil in the stack.

Test more than one spot. A lodged crop dries unevenly by definition. A moisture tester reading taken from the fluffy top of the windrow will tell you what you want to hear. Probe deep, probe in several places, and specifically hunt for the slugs. Round bales going up in net generally want 15–18% moisture; a bale that averages 16% but contains a fist-sized 40% core is a bale that will heat. See baling moisture for net-wrapped bales.

Consider baleage instead. If the crop is lodged, the forecast is against you, and it won't dry evenly, wrapping it wet is often the better decision than forcing dry hay you don't trust. Expect more dirt. Cutting low into a mat picks up soil. That means more ash, more dust, and a more abrasive bale surface. Bales off lodged ground are worth stacking where you'll feed them first rather than holding them over.


When a lodged crop is a write-off

Sometimes the honest answer is that the crop is gone. If it has been flat and wet for a week or more in warm weather, the bottom of the mat will already be rotting and the feed value won't justify the fuel. Two things to weigh:

  • Stand damage. Prolonged lodging kills plants outright by smothering them. One grower reported large patches of absolutely nothing growing under a heavily lodged new stand, and had to reseed. Clearing the field promptly — even with a rotary cutter — protects what's underneath.
  • Getting the field clean. Leaving a rotting mat in place suppresses regrowth and encourages disease. Mowing it off and leaving it is often the right call even when there's no salable hay in it.

Lodged-crop field checklist

Print this or keep it on your phone for the morning after a storm.

  1. Walk the field first. Identify the predominant direction of lay before you unhook anything. Plan your passes around it.
  2. Wait if you can. If the crop is soaking, let it dry standing for a day. This single decision prevents most of the wet-slug problem.
  3. Tilt the cutterbar forward until you're recovering roughly 90% of the crop, then stop.
  4. Drop a gear or two on the tractor and keep the PTO at full rated speed.
  5. Fit fresh knives and check guards and sections before you start, not halfway through.
  6. Mow into the lodging every pass, deadheading back if you must.
  7. Narrow your cut by about a foot so the tractor-side shoe runs in clean stubble.
  8. Lay the swath out wide rather than tight, so sun reaches the ground between rows.
  9. Plan two tedding passes at very low ground speed. Go over stubborn clumps twice.
  10. Probe deep and in several spots before baling. Hunt for slugs, not averages.
  11. Mark those bales and feed them first, and watch the stack for heating.
