Hay Yield Per Acre: How Many Round Bales Per Acre to Expect

Before you rent ground, buy a baler, or order a season's worth of net wrap, you want one number: hay yield per acre. It drives how many acres you need, how many round bales per acre you'll haul off, and how much wrap you'll buy to put them up. The honest answer is that yield swings wildly with crop, soil, water, and weather — but there's a simple way to pin down a working number for your fields, and a bit of arithmetic that turns tons per acre into a bale count you can actually plan around.

Quick answer: Most U.S. hay runs 3 to 6 tons per acre per year — dryland grass on the low end, irrigated or well-managed alfalfa on the high end (8+ tons in the best country). The reason the question comes up at all is that people quote bale counts to each other constantly — and the numbers sound absurd until you ask about bale size. One grandfather's "12 bales an acre" figure that kicked off that thread turned out to describe heavy 3-string bales in a short-season climate; in most of the country 12 bales an acre "would not be worth cutting." The formula: yield ÷ bale weight = bales per acre

What's a realistic yield? Tons per acre by crop and conditions

There's no single "hay yield per acre" number — it's a range set by species, water, fertility, and how long your season runs. The working spread producers quote lands between about 3 and 10 tons per acre per year:
