The stockpiling recipe, step by step

Building a good stockpile is deliberate. You are essentially growing a standing hay crop and choosing not to cut it. Here is the four-step recipe graziers and extension agronomists agree on.

Step 1 — Clean off the summer growth (early-to-mid August)

Graze or clip the chosen field down to about 3–4 inches in early-to-mid August. You want fresh, high-quality regrowth heading into fall, not old summer-grown stems full of seedheads. Removing the mature summer growth resets the field for a clean stockpile.

Step 2 — Apply nitrogen (late August)

This is the step that turns grazing into stockpiling. Apply roughly 40–60 lb of actual nitrogen per acre in late August, ideally with rain in the forecast to move it in. Nitrogen in late summer drives leafy fall growth and boosts both the tonnage and the crude protein of the stockpile.
