Quick answer: Square bales can be wrapped, and big squares are wrapped commercially every day — but a square is harder to seal than a round because film tension concentrates on the corners, and corners are the first thing to tear. Four rules carry most of the outcome: set bale length to fit the wrapper's table before you bale, bale dense and genuinely square (a banana-shaped bale will not stay on a turntable), bale in the 45–60% moisture window, and run at least six layers of film on the sides. Small squares are a separate question with a separate answer: the machines exist, but the economics are dominated by hand labor, because a 50 lb dry bale becomes a 60 lb wet bale that somebody lifts twice.
Almost everything written about baleage assumes a round bale. That is reasonable — most baleage is round — but it leaves a real group of operators without an answer. If you run a big square baler, own no round baler, and lose a cutting to weather, "make round baleage instead" is not advice. It is a $40,000 equipment purchase.

Why a square bale is harder to wrap than a round one
On a round bale, stretch film lays onto a continuously curving surface. Tension distributes evenly around the circumference, and there is no point where the film has to change direction abruptly.
A square bale gives you eight corners and twelve edges. As the turntable spins, the film bridges each corner rather than conforming to it, so the tension that was spread across a whole curve now lands on a small area of plastic — repeatedly, once per revolution. Add a stiff alfalfa stem poking out of that corner and you have the classic failure.
An operator who bought a McHale square wrapper in a hurry to save 150 tons of fifth-cutting alfalfa hit it on the first night, and the answer he got named the variable exactly:

That is the whole square-bale problem in one sentence. Drier forage is stiffer and springier, stems stand prouder at the corner, and the bale rebounds against the film instead of settling into it. The corner tears, air gets in, and you find the spoiled block next February.
It is worth being precise about what net wrap does and does not do here, because the two products get conflated. Net wrap works by a mechanism that only exists inside a round baler's chamber — a forum member explained it correctly while thinking through a homemade bundler:

That is right, and it is why net wrap is not a square-bale product. Net holds a round bale because the bale expands into it. A square bale is held by twine and sealed by stretch film — two different jobs, as we lay out in net wrap vs film binding.
Set bale length before you set anything else
This is the step people skip, and it is the one that strands bales half-wrapped in the field. A square-bale wrapper has a fixed table. Your baler does not know that.
"Bale it up, skip the acid (why ruin it with that stuff), and don't skimp on wrap. You should have at least six layers on the sides of the bales. Remember to shorten your bale length down to accommodate your wrapper."

He runs about 6.5 feet for his own wrappers. The exact number is machine-specific — check your table length — but the principle is not: shorten the bale before you start, not after you have 400 on the ground.

Bale length also drifts on you when the crop changes. He noted that his baler's length setting behaved differently on green haylage material than on dry hay, so a setting proven last week on dry grass is not proven for the wet crop you are about to run.
One more field-tunable variable worth knowing: turntable speed. He was throwing roughly every fifth bale off the table at 40 RPM, dropped to 30 and the problem largely went away, and could hold even poorly formed bales by going to 25. Slower is slower, but a wrapped bale beats a fast reject.
Moisture: a narrower window than the round-bale rule of thumb
Purdue University Extension's baleage guidance puts the target at roughly 45–60% moisture, wrapped promptly after baling, with a minimum of six layers of film. Square bales sit at the fussier end of that range for the corner reasons above.
What the forum adds is what happens when you land outside the window — in both directions. On the dry side:

Read that carefully, because it is a trade, not a free lunch. Below about 30% you are not making silage; you are making sealed dry hay. It can feed beautifully, but it has no fermentation acids protecting it, so the seal is doing all of the work. One corner tear and there is nothing to fall back on. That is a genuinely useful decision rule. Inline tube wrappers want the wet end of the range and they lock you into feeding in tube order. Six layers is a floor, not a target

Film quality is a separate lever from film quantity, and on squares it earns its price faster than it does on rounds, because the corner is a stress concentration that punishes thin or inconsistent film:

Skip the acid
Preservative habits from dry baling do not transfer. Both experienced responders said so immediately:
"DON'T put acid on it if you will wrap. If anything, put an innoculant on, considering that you are on the lower end of ensiling moisture."

Density is the other free variable. A cutter or "silage special" baler with a knife bank makes a denser, better-shaped square that holds its corners and excludes more air, which is why it keeps coming up as the real ticket for this work.
Small squares: the machine works, the labor is the problem
Wrapping 50 lb squares is a genuinely different business from wrapping 3x4s, and it is one of the few forage topics where the internet's enthusiasm and the operators' arithmetic point in opposite directions.
The demand side is real. There is an identifiable customer:

Then he posted his actual numbers, which is the most valuable thing in any of these threads. Wrapping in New Zealand around 2015: roughly 25 bales per roll of 375mm film, film cost near US$2.70 per bale, a work rate of about 25 bales per hour, and a US$6,700 machine. To cover labor, machine and capital at a US$50/hour target, he calculated he needed about US$5 per bale — on jobs that are frequently only 50 to 100 bales.
Convert that to the thing that actually decides it. At 25 bales an hour, one person is lifting a wet bale onto the table and a heavier wrapped bale off it, 25 times an hour, all day:

So the bale has to be at least ~55 lb to stay on the table, and at 45–60% moisture it will be heavier than that. There is no version of this where the bales are light.

The honest resolution: small-square wrapping is a retail play, not a forage-production play. The recurring DIY idea: net-wrapping a bundle of small squares
This one comes up every few years — compress a stack of small squares like a Bale Baron pack, then wrap the bundle in net instead of paying for knotters. It is a clever thought and worth understanding why it does not hold.
The problem is the mechanism askinner described earlier. Net wrap grips because a round bale expands against it under residual chamber pressure, and because loose stem ends hook the mesh. A hand-squeezed bundle of small squares released from a grapple does not expand into the net; it relaxes away from it. Another member put the doubt plainly:

Honestly: mostly by pointing out that the round-bale route is cheaper for most of the people asking this question. Net wrap is a round-baler consumable — it does not go on a square bale, and no amount of clever fabrication changes the physics.
But the two products meet in one real place.
