Every small square hay operation eventually hits the same wall. The baler works fine. The weather cooperates. But the bales are lying in the field and the only way they get to the barn is somebody picking each one up by hand — twice, or three times if you count unloading. Crew gets harder to find every year, the good help wants a real job, and one rained-on load can cost more than a week of labor.
That is the moment growers start pricing accumulators, grapples, bale wagons and bundlers. The problem is that these machines solve different problems, cost anywhere from $4,000 to $290,000, and the comparison articles you find online usually list features instead of answering the question that actually matters: which one fits your barn, your fields and the way you sell hay. This guide works through that decision the way experienced small square growers do — the five tiers of mechanization, what each one really costs and yields, and the three constraints that eliminate options before you ever look at a brochure.
The five tiers of small square bale handling
The clearest framework we have seen for this decision came out of a HayTalk thread titled, appropriately, "Tired of hand stacking." A grower laid out the options as a ladder of increasing capital and decreasing labor:
"Out front, accumulator/grapple combos. Low cost, good for the small acreage farmer. ... Drag type accumulators and grapple. ... Table type accumulators and grapple. Usually requires tractor hydraulics to function. ... Kuhn type accumulator and grapple. Keeps bales off ground, does not require tractor hydraulics. ... Pull type stack wagon. ... Self-propelled stack wagon."

Think of it as five tiers:
- Tier 0 — Bale thrower and kicker wagons. The baler throws bales into a high-sided wagon pulled behind it. Cheapest entry, hardest on the bales, still requires hand-stacking at the barn.
- Tier 1 — Front-mounted accumulator with grapple. A small accumulator carried on the front of the baling tractor groups bales as they come out. Lowest capital of the accumulator family.
- Tier 2 — Drag-type accumulator with grapple. Trails behind the baler, drops groups of 8–10 bales on the ground. Simple, few moving parts, no tractor hydraulics needed.
- Tier 3 — Table or "keep it off the ground" accumulator with grapple. Table types tip a formed group off; the Norden/Kuhns style carries and sets the group down flat without dragging. Adds hydraulic complexity but handles marginal bales better.
- Tier 4 — Pull-type bale wagon (stackliner). Picks bales off the ground, builds a stack on the machine, and sets the whole stack in the barn.
- Tier 5 — Self-propelled bale wagon or in-line bundler. The New Holland Stackcruiser family, or a bundler that ties bales into a shippable package.
One important nuance about tier 2: growers new to accumulators almost always worry about dragging bales on the ground and picking up dirt. Long-time users generally do not share that concern.

What does matter across the entire accumulator family is bale quality. Every one of these machines wants uniform, well-formed, consistently tied bales. As RockmartGA put it: "All accumulators like tight, consistent bales. Drag types are not as forgiving with loose or "banana" bales." If your baler is producing bananas, fix the baler before you buy handling equipment — a misadjusted knotter or uneven feeding will jam an accumulator all day. Three constraints that decide it before you shop
Before comparing brands, answer three questions. In most cases they eliminate two or three tiers outright.
1. How tall is your barn?
This is the single biggest filter and the one people discover too late. Bale wagons build a tall stack and then push it off the machine — they need clear height, a level floor and a door they can back through. A grower in the "Tired of hand stacking" thread had already ruled the category out on geometry alone: his barn ran from 14 ft down to 10 ft at the lean-to, which is simply not enough room for a stack wagon to set a load. Another summarized it plainly:
"Stack wagon or cruiser, if you have the height in the barn. Least labor, fewest vehicles. We switched 6 years ago, would have had to quit hay otherwise. 800 is an easy day."

Note the conditional. "If you have the height" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Roughly 14 ft is a working minimum for a pull-type stackliner, and 18–20 ft gives you room to stack high and use the machine the way it was designed. If you are building new storage anyway, the cheapest path to a bale wagon is often the building, not the machine — a point that comes up repeatedly on the forums:

2. How far is the hay from storage, and how many places does it go?
A bale wagon is fastest when it runs a short, repeatable loop between one field and one barn. Add road miles, several rented fields and three storage sites and the arithmetic reverses: an accumulator drops groups in the field that a grapple can load onto any trailer, from any field, at any time — including the next morning if the weather holds. That decoupling of baling from hauling is the accumulator system's real advantage.
3. How do you sell your hay?
If you sell by the bale to horse owners out of a barn, bundles have limited value and may even hurt — most retail customers do not want to buy 21 bales at once, and the bundle has to be broken apart anyway. If you sell by the ton or by the semi-load to a broker or a dairy, bundles are transformative. One grower framed the tradeoff exactly:
"Distance to storage and building type are two big factors. My big one is on the marketing side though. Some customers will see little value in a bundle and some will see a lot."

Accumulator and grapple: how it actually works
An accumulator sits behind or beside the baler and collects bales into a group — commonly 8, 10, 14, 15 or 18 depending on the model — then releases the group in the field. A matching grapple on a loader picks the whole group up in one bite and sets it on a trailer or in the barn. The two pieces are sold as a matched pair because the grapple's fingers have to line up with the pattern the accumulator makes.
Two things make this system work in practice. First, the loader machine matters more than most buyers expect. A skid steer beats a tractor loader for this job because you are working in reverse constantly and visibility is everything. As one grower put it, "a skidsteer would be ideal for visibility and maneuverability purposes." A commercial operator running large volume put the labor side of it more bluntly:
"It seems so much easier to train somebody to run a skid steer on a grapple they get the idea a lot faster now"

Second, the throughput is genuinely high once the system is dialed in. Real numbers from growers running these setups:
- ~300 bales an hour into the barn. A grower running a Parrish accumulator with a 10-bale grapple on the front and the rear of the tractor reported: "I can put an average of 300 bales an hour in the barn."
- 5,400 bales in three cuttings, small crew. Ox76's setup — "Drag accumulator behind baler, grapple on skidsteer, pickup hauling gooseneck flatbed trailer." — handled 5,400 bales in the 50–60 lb range in a season.
- 30,000 bales with 4–6 people to 100,000+ with three. The most dramatic before-and-after came from a commercial operator: "I went from doing 30,000 bales a year with 4 to 6 guys to moving over 100,000 a year with just three of us and a part-time."
The accumulator's other underrated strength is thin cuttings. Bale wagons pick bales one at a time and their cycle time is largely fixed, so a light third cutting with widely spaced bales punishes them. An accumulator just takes longer to fill a group. The same commercial operator who quoted roughly 4,000 bales a day with a wagon versus 6,000 with the accumulator noted that in the thinner cuttings the gap widens further in the accumulator's favor, before you even count the loadout advantage.
The tradeoff is machines and people. You need a baling tractor, an accumulator, a loader machine, a grapple and trailers — and somebody in the loader while somebody else is baling. As one grower observed about both systems, "it's the supporting cast that maximizes the efficiency of either system."
Bale wagons: the most bales per person per day
A bale wagon (New Holland's self-propelled machines are the Stackcruiser line; pull-type versions are stackliners) picks bales off the ground with a chain-driven pickup, builds a stack on a table, tips the table up, and eventually pushes the finished stack off the back. One person, one machine, from field to barn floor. That is the pitch, and when the barn suits it, it delivers.
Current New Holland Stackcruiser models give a sense of the capacity range: the 102 handles 14×18 or 16×18 in. bales, loads them three wide, and carries up to 161 bales per stack; the 103 handles 16×18 two-tie bales plus some three-tie sizes with a capacity of 82; the 105 is a large-square machine. Older two-tie machines — the 1030, 1033, 1037, 1044, 1049 and the Super 1048 — are everywhere on the used market and are what most small growers actually buy.
Solo capability is the headline benefit. One grower's season summary:
"I put up 1800 14x18 bales from 20 acres with the assistance of (2) tractors and a super 1048 this year. It took about 10-11 days, I was the only driver and I worked my normal 50-hour week job."

The used-machine objection — they're 50 years old, parts must be impossible — is largely a myth for the New Holland line:
"These machines were built in the 70’s and are easy to maintain. Parts are easily available. It’s basically Ford medium duty truck Parts."

There are two real drawbacks, and both are worth taking seriously.
They build stacks; they do not take them apart. If you sell bale-by-bale out of the barn, you still need a way to break down a 100-bale stack — usually by hand, or with a squeeze. As one grower said in a wagon-versus-accumulator thread: "bale wagons can be nice for putting up a stack. They'll never help you take it down though." An accumulator-and-grapple system, by contrast, leaves hay in grapple-sized groups that come apart easily.
The learning curve is real, and old machines need commissioning. Threads about bale wagon frustration are dominated by first-season problems — bales falling over on the table, the tie tier not tripping, a manual-tie machine being fought instead of set up. The consensus response from experienced owners is to get the machine fully right before judging it:
"I’d like to see you have a year of operating fully functional wagons before giving up on them"

Bundlers: Bale Baron vs Bale Band-It vs Arcusin
A bundler is a different animal. Instead of stacking loose bales, it compresses a set number of small squares into a single tied or strapped package that a loader handles like one giant bale — and that stacks into a van trailer or a container without hand labor.

The Baron-versus-Band-It choice tracks your bale length and your pricing model more than anything else:
"Bandit is more suited to by the ton, you need a long, heavy bale (42"). Baron is more suited to by the bale, since you have a 34 - 36" bale."

Growers running a Band-It in practice often target shorter than the 42 in. maximum — "You don't need 42" bales, 37/38 is my target." A Bale Baron compresses a 32 in. bale into roughly 35 in. of bundle length, which is why bundle count and bale length have to be planned together against your trailer's interior dimensions. A Band-It 220 bundle runs roughly 8 ft long by 4.5 ft wide by 3.5 ft tall and stacks three high and seven deep in a van.
The commercial case for bundles is loadout labor, and it is the strongest argument in the category:
"If you want to load van trailers with one guy it's hard to beat bundles."

Two cautions. Bundlers are the most complex machines in this comparison and carry the highest purchase price; parts and dealer support vary sharply by brand and region, and the Arcusin line in particular has had limited North American dealer coverage with parts sourced from Spain. And a bundle only pays if your customer values it — a bundle you have to cut apart in the barn is added cost with no return.
Bale throwers and kicker wagons
The oldest mechanized option is still the cheapest by a wide margin. A thrower (kicker) mounts on the back of the baler and launches bales into a high-sided wagon towed behind. Nobody rides the wagon, nobody touches a bale in the field.
The costs are real: throwers are hard on bales and on twine, they demand a tight, well-tied bale to survive the trip, and they only get hay to the barn — you still hand-stack at the other end, or unload with a conveyor. Capacity is limited by wagon volume, so you are constantly swapping wagons. But for an operation doing a few thousand bales a year, particularly one selling into a market that does not reward capital investment, the thrower plus two or three kicker wagons is genuinely hard to beat on cost per bale. It also fails gracefully — a broken chain is a shop-floor repair, not a dealer call.

What these systems cost
Prices move, dealer inventory varies and condition dominates on used equipment, so treat these as orientation rather than quotes. As of mid-2026:
- Bale thrower + used kicker wagons — the cheapest complete system by a wide margin; wagons in usable condition are commonly found in the low four figures.
- Accumulator + grapple — the most common upgrade path, and the most scalable. Norden Mfg (formerly Kuhns Manufacturing — same ownership, new name) sells edge-stack models e18, e15 and e10 and flat models f15, f12, f10, f8 and f4, plus Grabber and Tie-Grabber loader attachments. Steffen Systems and Parrish are the other names growers mention most. Norden publishes a bale efficiency calculator worth running with your own numbers before you buy.
- Used New Holland bale wagons — an enormous range, roughly $2,950 to $157,000 across the auction and dealer market depending on model, age and whether it self-ties. Two-tie machines from the 1030/1033/1044/1048 era occupy the low end.
- New Stackcruiser — new self-propelled machines list in the $165,000–$288,000 range depending on model and options.
- Bundlers — the top of the market; expect to be well above a good used bale wagon, and budget for strapping or twine consumables plus a loader capable of handling a full bundle.
One planning note that comes up constantly: whatever system you choose, buy the loader and trailers to match. A grapple with no second tractor, or a bale wagon with no place to set the stack, is a system that will not deliver the numbers in the brochure.
When small squares stop making sense
There is an honest version of this comparison that ends with a different answer: for some of the hay you make, the right handling system is a round baler.
Small squares earn a premium in horse, goat and small-ruminant markets, and in any market where the buyer moves hay by hand. But if you are putting up cow hay, mulch hay, straw or a low-value first cutting, the labor math almost never works — and no accumulator, wagon or bundler changes the fact that a 50 lb bale requires roughly 40 times the handling events per ton of a 2,000 lb round bale.
