Round Baler Won't Stop Wrapping? 6 Causes for Net and Twine (All Brands)

A round baler that won't cut the wrap is one problem. A baler that won't stop wrapping — it keeps feeding net, keeps counting turns, or re-ties every bale instead of moving on — is the opposite failure, and it has its own short list of causes. The good news: it's almost always a sensor, a setting, or a stuck electrical part, and most fixes are cheap.

Quick answer: A round baler that won't stop wrapping is usually one of six things: (1) the wrap-count sensor (counter roller magnet) isn't registering turns, so the system keeps feeding; (2) the wraps/dwell setting is too high; (3) a stuck relay or solenoid is firing the wrap circuit continuously; (4) low voltage is making the actuator behave erratically; (5) the knife isn't severing, so the cycle never "completes"; or (6) on a twine baler, the knotter/trip isn't resetting. Start with the sensor and the settings — they're free to check.


First: net wrap or twine? They fail differently

"Won't stop wrapping" means two different things depending on what your baler ties with — and the first question experienced operators ask is always the same one:

"String or net?"

  • Net wrap that won't stop = the wrap system keeps feeding net, over-wraps the bale, or the duckbill/knife keeps cycling. Causes #1–#5 below.
  • Twine that won't stop = the baler ties a perfect knot, then immediately tries to tie again instead of starting the next bale. Causes #3, #5, and #6.

Cause #1: The wrap-count sensor isn't registering turns (net)

This is the most common net cause. Your baler counts wraps with a small counter roller that rides on the net roll; a magnet on its back face passes a sensor once per revolution. The control box feeds net until it has counted the turns you set — if it never counts them, it never stops.

What to check: With the tractor engine off, swing the net roll out and find the counter roller and its magnet/sensor. As one HayTalk expert walked a newer operator through it:

"There is a magnet on the back face of the counter roller that passes a sensor when the net is being applied … once the magnet passes the sensor [the set number of] times, the duckbill will start to retract to the precut position."

If the magnet is gone, the sensor is dirty/loose, or the counter roller isn't turning (net not gripping it), the count never advances. Clean the sensor, confirm the magnet is present, and make sure the roller turns freely and the net actually drives it.

The fix: Reseat or replace the sensor/magnet; clear chaff; confirm the counter roller tracks the net. Cost: usually free to ~$60 for a sensor.


Cause #2: Wraps-per-bale or "dwell" set too high (net)

What to check: Your monitor's wrap/turns setting. If it's set to 4–6 turns, the baler is supposed to keep wrapping that long. Operators chasing a "won't stop" complaint sometimes just have the count cranked up from a previous cornstalk or resale-bale job.

The fix: Set it back to a normal hay value — most operators run roughly 2–2.5 turns for dry hay. (See how many wraps per bale.) Cost: free, 30 seconds.


Cause #3: A stuck relay or solenoid firing the circuit continuously

What to check: On monitored balers, a relay (or the monitor's output) commands the wrap actuator. If a relay sticks closed or develops contact resistance, it can fire the wrap circuit continuously or erratically. The fix: Clean and reseat the relays in the monitor/control circuit; replace a suspect relay ($10–$30). On New Holland, confirm the issue follows the baler, not the monitor — the "thinking" is done by the box on the baler, not the cab display, so a monitor swap won't fix a baler-side relay.

Cause #4: Low voltage making the actuator behave erratically

What to check: Is the monitor powered from the tractor's convenience/7-pin outlet, or run direct to the battery? Low voltage under load makes net actuators do strange things — including failing to complete a clean stop-and-cut cycle. As one operator was warned during a calibration:

"If you hear the actuator making a ratcheting sound at the end of its stroke then the calibration is not right."

A weak or noisy actuator stroke — and the over-/under-wrap that comes with it — frequently traces back to voltage.

Cause #5: The knife isn't severing, so the cycle never completes (net and twine)

What to check: If the wrap or twine is applied but never cut, many balers will not register the cycle as finished — and try again. On a twine baler this shows up as re-tying:

"It will tie perfectly, but instead of resuming to make another bale, it tries to tie again."

The most direct answer in that thread was blunt: "Replace the knife." A dull or mis-set knife that doesn't make a clean cut leaves the system thinking the job isn't done.

The fix: Sharpen or replace the cutting knife; confirm nothing (dirt, trash, a stone) is blocking it from coming down fully. Cost: $20–$60 for a knife.


Cause #6: Knotter or trip not resetting (twine)

What to check: On twine balers, a worn trip mechanism, a sticky knotter clutch, or a metering-wheel/trip-arm fault can re-trigger the tie cycle. There usually is a limit or trip that tells the baler the tie is done — the very first question on these threads is often "is there a limit switch?"

The fix: Inspect the trip linkage, knotter clutch dog, and metering wheel; clean and free up sticky pivots; consult the operator's manual configuration section. Cost: usually free to a few parts.

Pro tip: Before you buy any parts, swing the net roll out, kill the engine, and hand-cycle the wrap (hold the wrap button until the alarm, then spin the counter roller) to watch exactly where the cycle stalls. That one test isolates a sensor problem from an actuator problem in about two minutes.


Where the wrap itself comes in

A surprising share of "won't stop / won't cut / won't spread" complaints trace back to light, frayed wrap that tears mid-feed instead of advancing as a clean sheet — which throws off the count and the cut.
