Drum Mower vs Disc Mower: An Honest Buyer's Guide for Small Acreage

Quick answer: A drum mower is the cheaper, simpler, harder-to-break machine — roughly $3,500–$7,000 for a 6–7.5 ft cut, belt-driven, and almost indifferent to fire ant mounds, crawdad mounds and lodged hay. A disc mower costs roughly $8,000–$15,000, cuts 8 ft and wider, and covers ground far faster. Three things decide it for most small operations: drum mowers are heavy on the three-point (a 35 hp tractor can lift its own wheels off the ground), they leave a tight windrow you must ted rather than a wide swath, and blade life is crop-dependent — a set can go 60 acres in alfalfa but only 10 in coastal bermuda. Where their experience conflicts with the sales copy, we say so. It is written for the operator cutting somewhere between 20 and 150 acres a year, on ground that may or may not be smooth, with one or two tractors under 75 hp. What a drum mower actually is

A drum mower hangs two (occasionally three or four) large vertical drums off a beam. Each drum spins at roughly 1,900 rpm and carries three or four small blades at its base. Power comes down from the top, usually through a belt drive, and the cut material is thrown inward between the drums.

A disc mower does the opposite. Power runs along a low cutter bar through a sealed, oil-bath gear train, and a row of small discs — each with two free-swinging blades — spins just above the ground. The bar sits lower, cuts wider, and the crop falls more or less where it stood.

That single structural difference produces almost every practical trade-off below: where the weight sits, what happens when you hit a rock, how the crop lands, and what it costs.

The tractor question comes first, not last

This is the single most common surprise, and it has nothing to do with horsepower. A drum mower's mass sits high and well behind the lift arms. A 6 ft unit runs around 900 lb, and in the mowing position that weight is out to the side.

Note what is being said: the 35 hp tractor had enough power. It did not have enough ballast. He reported no trouble lifting the same mower with a 50 hp Massey Ferguson.

Practical rule: plan on roughly 50 hp and 5,000 lb of tractor for a 6 ft drum mower, or budget for wheel weights and loaded rear tires on anything lighter. Check the rear-lift capacity in your operator's manual at the far end of the arms, not at the ball ends — that is where the published number usually gets flattering. Blade life: the number nobody quotes you honestly

Here is where sales copy and field experience separate hardest. A drum mower has only six to eight blades doing all of the cutting, versus a dozen or more sharing the load on a disc bar. Fewer blades, same acres, faster wear.

Both statements can be true. Sixty acres is plausible in clean alfalfa; 10 to 25 acres is what abrasive, sandy, close-cut warm-season grass does to a blade. A long-time owner running prairie hay, sorghum-sudan, bermuda and bahia reported roughly 40 acres per set before reversing — right in the middle. Bermudagrass is grown on sandy soils across much of the Southeast and is typically cut low and often, which is precisely the combination that eats edges; the University of Georgia's Extension forage resources cover regional management for it.

The mitigating fact is cost. Blades run about $1 each, are reversible, and swap in well under a minute on most machines. Six blades at a dollar apiece is not a budget line. But it does mean a drum mower is a machine you maintain during the day, not one you sharpen in March and forget.

This is not a preference argument — it is measurable. University of Wisconsin-Madison Extension research on field drying forage for hay and haylage found alfalfa laid in a swath covering about 70% of the cut width can reach the 65% moisture mark in 6–8 hours, while the same crop in a narrow windrow at 25–30% of cut width may take 24 hours or more. Wide swaths keep leaf stomates open longer, so the plant loses water fast instead of burning sugars through prolonged respiration.

A drum mower puts you at the wrong end of that curve by design. That is survivable, and thousands of people survive it, but it means the tedder is not optional equipment — it is part of the purchase price. Budget for one in the same breath. There is a minority view worth recording. Operators with sharp field corners, sickle-bar habits, or a need to see the cut/uncut line clearly sometimes prefer the windrow, because the entrance into standing grass stays clean and clump-free. If you were going to ted anyway, the drum mower's windrow costs you less than it looks.


Durability: belt drive versus a gear case full of oil

Drum mowers earn their reputation here, and the forum evidence supports it.

Drum mowers are also notably tolerant of the things that stop other machines. Drum mowers throw rocks. This came up independently from the same owner across two years and two threads, and it is not a small hazard:

The mechanism is straightforward. Blades on a drum mower travel a large radius at about 1,900 rpm and release anything they strike on a tangent that is aimed up and back toward the tractor, not down. Disc mowers are not immune, but their discs are smaller, lower, and shrouded closer to the ground.

What to do about it:

  • Keep the factory canvas or rubber curtains on and in good condition. They are not decoration — a torn curtain is the difference between a deflected rock and a projectile.
  • Walk or drive new ground before the first cut and pick up loose stone, especially near lanes, gateways and old building sites.
  • Run with the cab closed, or wear eye protection on an open station.
  • Keep bystanders and helpers well behind and to the side — never in the throw arc.

Cut height, ground following and mud

A drum mower rides on skid saucers under each drum and sets its height by tilt, not by a lift setting. That makes a hydraulic top link close to essential.

Stock skid saucers typically put the blades about 2 in off the ground. Spacers can raise that to about 3 in. One buyer reported his dealer had tried 4 in of spacing and it "didn't work well" — beyond roughly 3 in, the drum starts to lose the ground reference that makes it work.

If you need a genuine 4 in stubble for stand health or for stockpiling, a drum mower will fight you. That is the honest decision rule, and it is worth stating plainly: if you already own a tractor that will comfortably run an 8 ft disc mower, and you can afford one, buy the disc. The drum mower's advantages are real but they are mostly advantages of price, simplicity and toughness — not of throughput.

The drum mower market in the United States is smaller and more importer-driven than the disc market, which is worth knowing before you fall in love with a model. Names that come up repeatedly among North American owners include CCM, HayMAG, Kuhn, Galfre, Enorossi, SaMASZ, Befco, Fort, Tonutti and Fella, plus vintage PZ Zweegers machines still working after three decades. Several are European or Turkish-built and rebadged by a regional importer.

Two practical consequences:

  • Confirm parts availability before you buy. Blades, skid saucers, belts and u-joints are the wear items. Ask the seller what is on the shelf, not what can be ordered.
  • Ask who honors the warranty if the importer changes hands. Two-year warranties were common on new units, but a warranty is only as good as the entity behind it.
