Why 48″ or 51″ is the right size for the 460M
The 460M's chamber is the same 4-foot configuration as the older 458, 459, 466, and 467 — meaning all of those balers take the same family of net wrap (123 cm / 48 inch native, with 130 cm / 51 inch as an option). If you're upgrading from an older JD 4-foot baler, your existing rolls will fit the 460M without changes.
Net wrap width is determined by the chamber width of the baler, not the bale diameter. A 4-ft e/m/r series baler like the John Deere 460M has a chamber that accepts 48″ or 51″ wrap. Going narrower will leave bare patches at the bale edges (water ingress, hay loss); going wider than the chamber's tolerance jams the wrap roller or causes wrinkling.
How many wraps per bale on a John Deere 460M?
XES guidance based on crop and storage:
- Silage (high moisture, short-term): 2–2.5 wraps
- Hay (dry, standard outdoor storage): 2.5–3 wraps
- Straw (low cohesion): 3–4 wraps
- Outdoor storage past 12 months or harsh UV/freeze-thaw: add 1 extra wrap

Frequently asked questions
What size net wrap does a John Deere 460M use?
A John Deere 460M accepts either 48-inch (123 cm) or 51-inch (130 cm) net wrap. XES SKU E48X9840G ($239.99) is the standard fit; SKU E51X9840G ($249.99) is the wider option.
Should I pick 48-inch or 51-inch for my 460M?
If your hay is going under cover within a few weeks, 48-inch is the standard chamber width and gives a clean, square-edge bale. If you store bales outdoors for 6+ months, 51-inch overhangs slightly and provides extra edge protection against rain ingress.
Will the same wrap fit my older John Deere 459 or 466?
Yes. The 460M has the same 4-foot chamber as the 459, 466, 467, 468, and 469. SKU E48X9840G is interchangeable across all of these.
Is XES net wrap a CoverEdge alternative for the 460M?
XES is a high-quality standard net wrap that fits the 460M chamber. CoverEdge is a JD-branded edge-to-edge product. For balers that accept either, XES delivers similar field performance at 30-50% lower cost.
How many bales will one roll of XES 48-inch net wrap make on a 460M?
At a typical 3 wraps per bale on a 5-ft-diameter bale, 9,840 ft of wrap covers about 200–210 bales per roll — roughly 157 at a tighter 4 wraps, or up to 250 at 2.5 wraps for tight silage.
