Tires are the limit, not the hitch

The failure mechanism is heat. A tire flexes as it rolls; flexing generates heat; heat has to escape faster than it's created. Bias-ply construction generates more internal friction and sheds heat more slowly than radial construction, so sustained highway speed on an implement tire builds heat until the tire lets go. The thick rubber that makes an aircraft tire thorn-proof also makes it an excellent insulator, so it cannot dump the heat it makes. Rated for a 60-second takeoff roll is not the same as rated for a two-hour tow.

Practical tire advice for a long move

Plan your following distance and your downgrades around a load that will not help you stop. Rain, gravel, and a half-ton tow vehicle stack the odds badly.

Sway, whip, and bent axles

Two mechanical gremlins show up specifically on used machines.
