We are writing this because a dead monitor stops net wrap, and we get asked. Prices quoted are what individual operators reported paying in specific years — they are anecdotes, not quotes you can hold anyone to.
Quick answer: Before spending anything, prove the monitor is actually the fault — the single most common false diagnosis is a power supply problem, and at least one operator bought a new monitor before finding a loose battery-cable nut. If the monitor really is dead you have four routes: repair/rebuild by an electronics shop (operators reported roughly $150 to $700 depending on the fault), a used or salvage unit, a new OEM unit (reported at $2,500 from AGCO for a Massey 1756 and around $3,500 from Deere in Australia for a BaleTrak), or running the baler without it. That last option has a hard limit worth knowing before you plan around it: on John Deere's 467/567-era balers, the manual's bypass switch is explicitly "Twine Wrap Only." A manual bypass gets you tying twine — it does not get you net wrap. If you net wrap, a working controller is not optional.
A baler monitor failure arrives at the worst possible time and with the worst possible advice attached. Here is the version most owners hear first:
"the bale monitor/computer on my mid-size NH590 baler is not working. I have been told there is no way to repair or replace this and I must replace my baler. Perfectly good baler, do not want to replace it."

That advice is usually wrong, or at least premature. This guide is about what to do after you have diagnosed a monitor fault — sourcing, cost, compatibility and workarounds. First: prove the monitor is actually the fault
Monitors get blamed for problems they did not cause, because they are the part with the screen on it. The cheapest test available is a straight swap:

Note the direction of that test. Putting a known-good loaner monitor on your baler tells you less than putting your monitor on a known-good baler, because the first test leaves your harness and your power supply in the circuit. Swap both ways if you can.
The thread that advice came from is worth reading in full, because it ends the way a surprising number of these end. The owner had a wrap fault, borrowed a loaner monitor that worked flawlessly, bought a brand-new monitor that did not work, and then found this:

Another operator in a separate thread describes the same class of fault from the other end — a new baler that would not cut net until the power supply was corrected:

Before you buy anything, confirm: supply voltage at the monitor under load (not just key-on), every pin in the tractor-to-baler connector fully seated and un-corroded, and the ground path. A monitor starved of volts behaves exactly like a failing monitor — intermittent wrap misses first, then dead. If your specific symptom is net-related rather than monitor-related, net wrap won't start or feed, net wrap won't cut and baler won't stop wrapping cover those branches.
Why a dead monitor stops net wrap but not always twine
This is the fact that should shape your whole decision, and it comes straight from the OEM rather than from us.
On John Deere's 467/467 Silage Special/567 generation, the operator's manual documents a hardware bypass for electronic failure. Its title is the important part: "Using Bypass Switch (Twine Wrap Only)." The manual states that the bypass switch "allows direct operation of the twine actuator in the event of an electronic failure," and the manual's manual-key page is equally explicit that the EXTEND and RETRACT keys operate the "twine actuator only."
The practical consequence: a manual bypass is a twine lifeline, not a net-wrap lifeline. If you have converted to net and sold or scrapped your twine boxes, "I'll just run it manually until parts arrive" may not be available to you. Operators who say "you can run the baler manually" are usually describing twine tying. Confirm what your specific machine's bypass actually drives before you plan a season around it.

This table is a decision aid, not a ranking. Which route is right depends almost entirely on how obsolete your machine is and how soon you need to bale.

The harness line is the one people forget. A monitor bought without its matching harness may not be a complete solution:

Used and salvage units: the three compatibility traps
The obvious move is to buy a used monitor. It is also the move most likely to waste your money, for three specific reasons.
Trap 1: they are scarcer than you would expect
Monitors do not usually get parted out, because they do not usually fail. They also tend to stay with the machine. Two operators explain the market from opposite directions:

The corollary — noted repeatedly in these threads — is that fire-damaged balers are the main source of salvage monitors, and a monitor that survived a shop fire may still be sound:

Trap 2: the connector generation changed mid-family
This is the one that catches people who correctly identify a "compatible" model. A HayTalk thread about adapting a JD 466 monitor to a 467 lays it out:

The same generational break shows up around the Deere 566/567 boundary, where the net wrap circuit itself changed:

Read that carefully: a monitor can interchange for twine and still not run net. If you net wrap, "it powers up and the twine arms move" is not a passing test. Verify the wrap function specifically. Trap 3: "remanufactured" may not mean what you want it to mean

Ask a prospective supplier three questions before paying: what exactly was replaced, is it tested on a running baler or only bench-tested, and what happens if it does not work on your machine. A repair shop that will state its test procedure is worth more than one quoting the lowest price.
Setting the model program on a replacement monitor
Here is a failure mode that looks catastrophic and is not. An operator fitted a factory-remanufactured Deere monitor and got nothing:

This is documented behaviour, not a defect. John Deere's operator's manual for the 467/467S/567 has a page titled "Changing Baler Model Program" which states:
"The monitor-controller software includes two baler model programs-467 and 567. Each program is written specifically for the baler model for which the monitor-controller was originally supplied.
When replacing monitor-controller with a new unit, or moving monitor-controller to a different model baler, review and revise the model program if necessary.
NOTE: The twine system will not operate correctly unless the displayed model number agrees with the baler model number."

So: a replacement monitor that "does not work" may simply be programmed for the wrong machine. Check the model program before you conclude the unit is bad or start returning parts. Every brand has an equivalent setup step — the channel numbers and key sequences differ, so use your own manual. What a swapped monitor does to the bale count
The monitor is the baler's odometer, so moving one has consequences for the machine's recorded history. The forums treat this with dark humour:
"Depends how many bales it has on it. I wonder how many people have 2 monitors. One with 20,000 bales on it and the other with 6000 when they want to trade it in."

The manual is more precise than the folklore, and the detail is useful whether you are buying or selling. On the 467/567 BaleTrak PLUS there are two counters:
- "The RESETABLE counter can be cleared or modified as desired, while the TOTAL BALE counter cannot be reset or cleared." The resettable count can be raised or lowered deliberately — the manual describes doing so to add fields together or remove aborted bales.
- "When using EXTEND (A) and RETRACT (B) keys, bale counter will not register additional bales." Bales finished manually do not increment the counters at all.
Two practical takeaways:
- If you are buying, ask for the TOTAL count, not the one on the screen. The resettable figure is a field tally and is explicitly modifiable. Confirm which counter you are being shown, and sanity-check it against wear on sprockets, belts and rollers — the physical condition of the machine is the honest odometer. - If you fit a replacement monitor, its counts come with it. Record your old machine's total before the swap and keep it with the service file, or you have permanently lost the machine's history.
Preventing the next failure: power it properly
The most consistent theme across every one of these threads is power quality. Monitors and wrap actuators are current-hungry and unforgiving of voltage drop. One operator's account ties the failure mode directly to the supply:
"Running the monitor with cab power is hard on the relays in the monitor, sent my monitor off to ag express to get new relays put in it after 20k bales as it was was starting to miss wrapping a few bales."

Opinions genuinely differ — several operators report tens of thousands of bales through a cab convenience outlet with no trouble at all, and on some machines the 12 V plug is how the manufacturer intended it to be powered. The defensible position is: follow your own manual's specified supply, and if you are chasing intermittent wrap misses, test the supply under load before you condemn the monitor. "Starting to miss wrapping a few bales" is the classic early warning, and it is far cheaper to fix as a wiring job than as a monitor.
Alongside power, the routine care that keeps these systems alive is unglamorous: keep the tractor-to-baler connector clean and capped, do not let the monitor sit in a wet cab or an unheated shed over winter, and store it indoors during the off-season. Safety boundary
Electrical work on a baler puts you near a knife, an actuator that can move without warning, and a raised gate.
- Shut off the engine, remove the key, and wait for all motion to stop before touching harnesses, connectors or the wrap mechanism.
- Engage the gate lock before any part of you goes under a raised gate.
- Do not test actuators by hand-cycling functions with the PTO engaged. If a test genuinely requires the machine running, it is a dealer or qualified-technician job.
- Disconnect battery power before working on wiring, and treat the net wrap knife as live at all times.
- Bypassing a monitor removes automatic cycle control. Know exactly what the bypass drives before you rely on it in a field.

Can you run a round baler without a monitor?
Partly, and it depends on the machine and on whether you tie with twine or net.
