Quick answer: When net wrap won't start and the bale just spins, it's almost always one of four things: (1) no net tail hanging past the duckbill for the bale to grab — usually a baffle gap or net-brake issue, (2) the duckbill/actuator isn't inserting (calibration or a stalled actuator), (3) low voltage or a bad ground causing intermittent failures, or (4) the monitor thinks the tailgate is open. Work through them in that order before you replace any parts.
Few things are more frustrating than a full bale spinning in the chamber while the net just sits there. You hear the beep, the counter says it's wrapping, and… nothing. Then you cycle the power, it works for three or four bales, and quits again.
The good news: "net wrap won't start" has a short list of usual suspects, and most of them cost nothing to fix. First, which problem do you actually have?
"Won't wrap" covers three different failures, and each has a different fix. Sort yours before you start turning wrenches:

The 60-second checks before you tear anything apart
Run these before you climb inside anything. They fix a surprising share of "won't start" calls:
- Is the system in auto or manual? If someone bumped the auto/manual button into manual, the baler will not automatically wrap — and on many machines it throws no error message. Confirm it's in auto.
- Is there net tail hanging past the duckbill? Open the side door and look. You want at least 2 inches of net protruding past the duckbill. If there's none, the bale has nothing to grab (more on this below).
- Is the net threaded correctly? The net has to be stuffed down into the duckbill with the threading tool — not just laid over the knife after you route it around the rollers. Experienced operators skip this step more often than you'd think. No threading tool? A piece of flat bar works.
- Is the tailgate fully latched? If the monitor thinks the gate is cracked open, it won't auto-wrap. Close it and clear any gate-open warning.
- Does the net roll turn freely? Spin the spreader roll by hand. A binding roll or an over-tight brake can stop the net from feeding.
- Is the baler getting good, clean power? Power should come directly from the battery, with a solid ground. This matters more than most people expect — see Cause #3.
Cause #1 — No net tail to grab (baffle gap or net brake)
This is the single most common reason net won't start. As one HayTalk operator put it while diagnosing a New Holland: "Is there enough net tail protruding on the duckbill? If the net has snapped back, there is none for the bale to grab and pull in. If you keep losing the tail, the issue is either the baffle gap or the net brake" (HayTalk: BR7060 net wrap will not engage).
Here's the mechanism. When you thread net into the duckbill, it exits between two plates — an upper plate and a lower baffle. Over time and use, the baffle bends down, opening a gap. After the knife cuts, the net tail pops back through that gap far enough that there's nothing hanging out for the next bale to catch. Result: the bale spins and the net never starts.
How to inspect it safely. Take the tension off the belts and open the tailgate enough to get inside. Engage the tailgate hydraulic lock valve before you put any part of yourself into the baler — this is non-negotiable. Then spread the belts and look at where the net comes through. The baffle should sit in contact with the upper plate; if you see daylight (some operators find gaps of several inches), that's your problem.
How to adjust the baffle. On 5-foot balers the baffle typically has five mounting bolts over rubber grommets. A method shared repeatedly by experienced NH operators:
- Remove the baffle, clean caked dirt off both the baffle and the frame it bolts to (it won't seat otherwise), and reinstall.
- Tighten the 2nd-from-each-end bolts until the baffle just touches the duckbill on each side.
- Snug the end bolts to raise the corners, leaving a slight gap at each end (roughly a finger's width) — this keeps net spreading to the edges of the bale.
- Tighten the center bolt last to take up the slack.
- Test: put your hand in the slot, flex the baffle down, and release. It should pop back up firmly against the duckbill.
Don't over-tighten. A baffle jammed too hard against the duckbill can stop the net from spreading to the ends of the bale, trading one problem for another. If the net brake is the culprit instead, back the brake tension off — you want just enough drag to spread the net, not enough to snap the tail back.
Cause #2 — The duckbill/actuator won't insert
If the net tail is fine but the duckbill never drives the net into the chamber, the insertion side is the problem.
- Recalibrate the actuator/duckbill. Run your machine's duckbill-insertion calibration. A miscalibrated insert position is a common cause after knife work or parts replacement.
- Mind the stop. As one operator explained, it's fine if the duckbill stop bottoms out — but the power has to be cut to the actuator by the time it hits that stop. "If the actuator powers the duckbill into that stop, the actuator is prone to binding and getting stuck in the insert position" (HayTalk: BR7090 not grabbing net wrap). Study the insertion-calibration procedure and this will make sense.
- Reseat the cam/notch. If the actuator won't fully extend or retract, check that the drive notch (the roller/cam that moves the duckbill) is seated in the duckbill's groove. Operators have fixed a "won't wrap" by simply popping that notch back into place.
- Straighten a bent knife link. The link that runs to the knife has a roller that rides in the duckbill slot. If it's bent or bowed, straighten it; at the home position there should be clearance between the roller and the top of the slot.
- Don't overfill the duckbill. Pushing too much net through the duckbill can also stop it from starting. More is not better.
- Check the top of the windguard. If this only happens in fine, dry second or third cutting, chaff packed on the windguard (compressor rack) can sit right in the duckbill's path and physically block insertion — nothing is wrong with the net system at all. See the round baler windguard guide.
Cause #3 — Low voltage or a bad ground
Intermittent is the keyword. If the baler works cold, then acts up more the longer you run, and cycling the power "fixes" it for a few bales, suspect electrical before mechanical.
Real examples from the field: one operator's battery voltage sagged into the 10–11 volt range — the tractor started fine, but the baler threw errors that got worse as the day went on. The cause was an alternator wire that had come off plus an undercharged battery; charge the battery, fix the wire, and the baler wrapped normally again. Another operator with a John Deere had the monitor wired to the right battery, kept getting intermittent no-starts, switched the monitor's power to the left battery, and the problem cleared — "it's got to be something with the voltage" (HayTalk).
What to check:
- Run monitor power directly from the battery, not off a switched or shared circuit. Clean, tighten, and verify the ground.
- Unplug and re-seat the wiring harness between the monitor and the baler — a wiggle or a re-plug clears a lot of gremlins. Inspect the connector for a pushed-down (backed-out) pin.
- Look for a broken or chafed wire between the monitor and the net actuator.
- Load-test: on some John Deere monitors you can command the actuator to extend/retract from a diagnostic channel and watch the net-roller belt tighten and loosen to confirm the actuator is actually driving.
Cause #4 — The monitor thinks the tailgate is open
During wrapping the tailgate rocks back and forth. If the latches are worn, that movement can be enough for the tailgate sensor to briefly read "open," which stops the duckbill mid-cycle — sometimes without even throwing an alarm, because there's a time delay before the error triggers. Fix: adjust the tailgate sensor as close to the tailgate pin as possible (extend the slots in the mounting bracket and pry it toward the pin), and address worn latches so the gate doesn't wander.
Reading the warning triangles and error codes
On New Holland Bale Command machines, the flashing triangle tells you which subsystem is unhappy:
- Wrap triangle flashing → a problem with the net (it didn't start — think baffle gap / net tail).
- Actuator triangle flashing → the actuator is stalling (check the insert calibration and the stop; look for the cylinder rod stuck partly extended).
- Tailgate triangle flashing → the tailgate isn't latched, so it won't auto-wrap.

When it's the net, not the baler
Once the machine is set up right, the net itself can still cause no-starts:
- Watch for a roll-size pattern. If failures cluster when the roll is nearly full or nearly empty, the diameter is changing your feed geometry or brake drag — a sign the brake/threading needs fine-tuning for that roll.
- Wet, heavy hay can keep a marginal setup from grabbing the tail. A baler that's borderline in dry hay will act up in tough, wet windrows.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my net wrap start for a few bales and then quit?
Intermittent no-starts that clear when you cycle the power usually mean low voltage or a loose connection, not a mechanical failure. Run monitor power straight from the battery, check and clean the ground, re-seat the harness, and look for a pushed-down pin or a chafed wire to the actuator. A sagging battery or a disconnected alternator wire is a classic cause.
The bale just spins and the net never grabs — what's wrong?
Almost always there's no net tail hanging past the duckbill for the bale to catch. After the cut, the tail pops back through a gap between the duckbill and the baffle. How much net should hang past the duckbill?

What does a flashing actuator triangle mean?
On New Holland machines the actuator triangle indicates the actuator is stalling. Check the duckbill insertion calibration and make sure power is cut to the actuator before it bottoms out on its stop, and look for the cylinder rod stuck partly extended. A wrap triangle instead points at the net not starting; a tailgate triangle means the gate isn't latched.
Do I need to replace the actuator?
